🚀 Exciting times for the LOFAR telescope as we officially transition from LOFAR1 to LOFAR2.0! After over a decade of groundbreaking research and more than 750 published scientific papers, we're gearing up for an amazing upgrade that will significantly enhance our data capabilities. The transition promises to increase computing power by a factor of 10 and improve sensitivity, which will open up new frontiers in radio astronomy. We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a strong background in data analysis and interest in exploring the physics of radio emission from lightning using data from the LOFAR radio telescope. 🌌 Crisis in the Cosmos: Starlink's Radio Waves Outshine the Stars New research using the powerful LOFAR radio telescope reveals that SpaceX's second-generation Starlink satellites are leaking up to 32 times more unintended radio waves than their predecessors, posing a serious threat to astronomical observations. Astronomers warn that the radio emissions from these "V2-mini" satellites are 10 million times brighter than the faintest astronomical sources, risking the integrity of valuable research. As satellite companies rush to expand their constellations, collaboration is essential between industry, regulators, and the scientific community to find solutions. Prof. Jessica Dempsey: “These clever techniques to find faint signals in the Universe have returned technology advancements to industry and society – from GPS to WiFi. We don’t just co-exist, we thrive together. We have the solutions for this symbiosis in space as well – we just need the regulators to support us, and the industry to meet us half-way.
