🔷It was bound to happen, but we've started to see that Group Commercial Insurance (not self-funded) plans are excluding coverage for certain GLP-1 medications (think Wegovy, Saxenda, etc.,) if the reason for the Rx is to assist the patient/member to lose weight. 🔷In like manner, we're starting to see health plans restrict access to medications like Ozempic, Trulicity, etc, unless the licensed prescriber specifically issues the medication Rx for T2 diabetes control. 🔷❓So what gives? 🔷✅Misuse of these medications along with hefty price tag have led to restrictions on the formulary.

FDA approves another weight loss drug, Zepbound - joining Ozempic and Wegovy! These injectable medications were originally prescribed for diabetes management but are now being requested more widely for weight loss. As the expected demand for these prescription drugs rises, employers are facing an important decision point: whether or not to cover these pricey drugs on their health insurance plans. In general, weight loss drugs are not widely covered by employer-sponsored plans, but this could change in the future! How broadly Zepbound will be covered isn’t clear yet, but I'm sure we'll hear more about it! https://lnkd.in/gahx5FAA #Zepbound #FDAapproval #healthinsurance #OneDigital #PharmacyConsulting
