AAFA was honored to have Lynne G. Bosma, LLMSW, C-HWC attend and speak at the Center for Food Allergy and Asthma Research (CFAAR) 2024 Summit for Advancing Equity in Food Allergy (SAEFA) conference in Chicago, IL. The summit convened experts, payors, policymakers, patients, and industry representatives, to discuss barriers and strategies for advancing health equity in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment journey of individuals who experience food allergy health disparities. We learned there are approximately 4,000 allergists in the U.S. Only about 2,000 accept Medicaid, and even fewer of those take pediatric patients! Food allergy health disparities exist across the U.S. for children and adults: ➡ As of 2021, about 20 million people have food allergies in the U.S. ➡ About 16 million U.S. Adults have food allergies. ➡ About 4 million U.S. children have food allergies. ➡ in 2021, 7.6% of Black children had food allergies, compared to 5.5% of white children. ➡ Children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have asthma or other allergic diseases. AAFA supports policies that promote equitable access to affordable, quality health care for diagnosing, treating, and managing food allergies.

Whenever you read up on food allergies, asthma is not far behind. The two conditions are almost inextricably linked together at this point. According to the Allergy & Asthma Network, “Studies show 35-50 percent of people with food allergies have asthma. It’s suspected many people with asthma don’t even know they have a food allergy.” This only increases the danger surrounding anaphylaxis and other possible reactions. Understanding this relationship is crucial for the management of both treatments, as Victoria Groce explains, and may one day potentially offer a preventative measure as well. #Asthma #FoodAllergies #VC #AllergyDiagnostics

A great article summing up progress on the ADINA (Allergen Disclosure In Non-Food Articles) Act! INCLUDING information on how you can help!

I'd like to share a big THANK YOU to Allergy Amulet for sharing my daughter's story, and our push for legislative change! This change will make big pharma provide transparency with medication ingredients by labeling ALL over-the-counter and prescription medications with the top food allergens and gluten/gluten-containing-grains - the same as the food industry. This bill is known as the A.D.I.N.A. Act or the Allergen Disclosure In Non-food Articles Act. When people with Celiac Disease, gluten intolerances, Eosinophilic Esophagitis and severe food allergies (like my daughter, Adina) take any medication, there is a risk that the medication may harm them and not heal them. #didyouknow that approximately 93% of ALL MEDICATIONS in the US contain potentially life-threatening allergens and that more than 10% of the US population is at risk of having a reaction, some fatal? The attached article has resource links where you can follow the progress of the Bill, and learn how you can help! If I get a bag of peanuts, I might eat the whole thing! 🥜 🥜 🥜 But to some people, just a fraction of a peanut can be life-threatening. This week is #WorldAllergyWeek2024, and the focus is on food allergies; a chronic, potentially life-threatening disease affecting 200 million people. A common food allergy is peanut allergy. It leads to one of the highest rates of anaphylaxis; an acute allergic reaction that may result in respiratory arrest if not treated with quick and effective emergency treatment. Peanut allergy alone impacts an estimated 2.4 million children in the US and Europe. Raising awareness of this disease area is extremely important. At ALK, we recently launched Allergy , our new strategy that will guide our way into the next decade of pioneering allergy solutions with a mission to help many more people with allergies. One of our priorities will be to help people with different types of allergies – including food allergies. To succeed with this mission, we are committed to invest in research & development to strengthen the evidence for our established solutions and build portfolios within food allergy, anaphylaxis and adjacent disease areas. As CFO of ALK, I am proud to go to work every day together with so many passionate colleagues to ensure that we reach our ambitious goals, allowing us to also help people with food allergies – starting with peanut allergy. Thank you to the World Allergy Organization for initiating this yearly allergy campaign and for staying dedicated to raising awareness about allergies. #WorldAllergyWeek #allergy #allergiesawareness #foodallergy #CFO
