In 2021, Indigenous children accounted for 7.7% of children under 15 but for more than half (53.8%) of all foster children. Among all children in Canada under 15, Indigenous children were about 14 times more likely than non-Indigenous children to be in foster care (3.2% and 0.2%, respectively). Why should you care about kinship care? Studies have shown that children who receive kinship navigator services are significantly more likely to achieve permanent legal custodianship than those who don't. But even the ones that don’t reunify end up with more racially equitable outcomes! Kinship care can help children maintain familial and community bonds, increase placement stability and maintain a sense of identity, culture and belonging during times of crisis. #KinshipCare #KinshipCareMonth

A shocking leaked report has revealed scathing failures in NSW foster care system. DCJ uses emergency powers in more than half of all Aboriginal removals, yet the use of those powers cannot always be justified. Findings include: - DCJ uses structured decision-making (SDM) tool to assess whether children need to be placed in care, despite knowing the algorithm-based tool is biased and potentially harmful to Indigenous families. - DCJ's family preservation services clash with Aboriginal healing values. - Aboriginal people have little power to challenge the decisions made by biased algorithm-based tools Read my exclusive here; https://shorturl.at/ryLX8 #FosterCare #Dcj #NSW #Australia #AusPol #Exclusive #FosterCareSystem #IndigenousAustralia
