For years, retailers have flocked to set up shop in “it” neighborhoods in New York City. Before the #pandemic, as well as during the first couple years of its recovery, #Soho and #Nolita reigned supreme, with Valentino, Wilson Sporting Goods Co. and Vuori all opening stores there. #Williamsburg has also been buzzy among #DTC businesses, thanks to its chic cafes, thrift stores and waterfront views. Now, tides are shifting, and brands of all types and sizes — not just high-end ones — are making the move to #Midtown. Much of this is due to a major revamping of Rockefeller Center, which encompasses six square blocks. The people of Aberdeen are united behind efforts to regenerate Union Street and we share the sadness that many will feel at the loss of the St Nicholas store, which has been part of our high street since the 1940s.   However, unlike the sudden departure of John Lewis, this will be a phased migration and we are working with a building owner which feels an obligation to support the renewal of a city centre which has given it so much over multiple decades.   The assurances they have given to support the transition to new owner – and potentially a new use – provide some comfort.   This is also a £15million investment in the wider city centre and one of the biggest retail investments the city has seen in the past decade.   The new store will be on a similar scale to what is being created in Liverpool and Birmingham – so we are attracting investment at the same level as the biggest cities in England, which is a vote of confidence in our city and our economy.

Developers have stopped building enclosed malls, meaning existing operators don’t have to worry about a competitor opening down the road.
