CEO & Co-Founder at VirtaMed | Pioneering Surgical Simulation to Advance Healthcare & Patient Outcomes | Championing Data, Digital Twins, & Innovative Solutions | Committed to Agility, Diversity, Passion & Customer Focus
AI/ML in Surgery – glimpses into the potential with simulation Seven years ago, at VirtaMed we embarked on an ambitious journey, a project at the forefront of medical innovation: the development of the digital twin surgeon. In collaboration with #ETHZurich and the esteemed team of Prof. Joachim Buhmann, we ventured into the realm of surgical simulation, combining it with the power of AI/ML technologies. Our goal was to create an algorithm capable of autonomously navigating a surgical camera. The above graph illustrates that our efforts have borne fruit and illustrates the potential of AI/ML technologies in surgery - and glimpses into what will be possible in the future! The higher the line, the better the performance. The lower two lines represent the extra movement novices do, green an expert and on top the trained algorithm. In short: our algorithm learned by itself to outperform both novice and expert surgeons in specific tasks. This sets new benchmarks, opens opportunities for new training paradigms, all the way to enhancing actual surgeries - and all of this in a completely save envirornment! Of course, we are acutely aware of the challenges ahead. The tasks we've conquered are just the beginning, and the road to integrating these technologies into education and real-world surgical environments is both exciting and complex. It is only with partners and domain experts in surgery and ML that we will succeed. This journey, which began years ago, continues to unfold with our dedicated customers and partners. Together, we are not just witnessing but actively shaping the future of surgical training and practice. Stay tuned as we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in medical technology and surgical robotics. #DigitalTwin #SurgicalSimulation #surgicalrobotics #MachineLearning #ArtificialIntelligence #MedTech #Innovation #Collaboration #ETHZurich #BetterSurgeries #VirtaMed
