  STORIES OF THE PLUS INITIATIVE: Beyond Skilling, Empowering Dreams: Today we share with you the story of an aspirant who accidentally discovered his ultimate learning ground through #ThePlusInitiative.  Steve Nongsiej, a young man from #Shillong, navigates his unanticipated journey in hospitality with the spirit that it is a crucial building block for something greater. His evolution from a newcomer to someone with noticeable potential reflects not only his personal growth but also the untapped possibilities that can emerge from #skilling a #youth with minimal opportunities.    His aspirations and positive outlook have earned him recognition from his seniors, leading to his transition from the #frontoffice to #reservations – A commendable leap for a fresher with no prior experience.    We thank Coorg Marriott Resort & Spa for fostering and spotlighting Steve as one of the most promising outcomes of #ThePlusInitiative, a revolutionary skilling programme of The Job Plus in collaboration with Tourism & Hospitality Skill Council.    This is his story:    “Hi, I'm Steve Nongsieg. Shillong is my hometown. I graduated from Shillong College of Business Administration, harboring a dream of diving into the business world. But, you know, in these hills, opportunities are a bit scarce, and I was treading cluelessly until The Plus Initiative came my way. It felt like a detour to my business dream, but I saw an opportunity that wouldn’t have come to me otherwise. This training gave me a solid opportunity to learn new skills and start a job with a global brand. @MarriottINternational, the big player in the hospitality world, gave me a shot. It's not the entrepreneurial journey I pictured, but it's a foot in the door, and you've got to start somewhere, right? I had this idea of learning about business, accounts and finances. I started off at the Front Office, but they saw something in me and moved me to Reservations, which paved way for greater learning. It's my first job – I'm talking to people from all over, dealing with their requests, and it's like unintentional training on how to sell experiences. It's a different kind of learning, and I'm embracing it. The experiences are piling up. I'm getting an inside look into how a giant brand like #Marriott operates. It's like I'm investing in some kind of #education, even if it's not the exact kind that I had imagined. This might not be the express route to my business dreams, but I'm realizing there's value in the journey. I intend to seek cross-training opportunities in various departments and facets of finance and administration, I do share my aspirations with my seniors and it opens more ways to propel me closer to my goal of becoming an entrepreneur. #coffeetalks! #1st In our recent discussion, my colleague Farid Rzayev, PMP® and I talked about the challenges of career development and the evolving landscape of daily routines and responsibilities. Despite the name "#coffee #talks," Farid, true to his tradition, still prefers tea over coffee. Reflecting on Farid's journey, which spans cultural shifts from Azerbaijan to Russia and England, we recognized the transformative power of education in shaping individuals. Education serves as a cornerstone for personal growth and development, yet Farid also emphasized that success in today's dynamic professional landscape demands more than just degrees and diplomas. It requires a diverse skill set, with a strong emphasis on soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability. Farid's perspective underscores the notion that while education lays the foundation, it's the cultivation of soft skills and interpersonal relationships that truly propel individuals forward in their careers. Being someone whom colleagues enjoy working with is just as essential as having a solid educational background. It's about striking a balance between academic achievement and personal qualities to thrive in the modern workplace. Additionally, we explored the impact of life changes on our approach to time management. Reflecting on his own journey, he acknowledged the shift in daily routines over the years. During single days, he meticulous tracking of every hour, striving for maximum efficiency. However, marriage and the passage of time have brought new responsibilities and priorities, necessitating a reevaluation of how he allocate his time. Nowadays, the focus lies in finding balance among professional commitments, family responsibilities, and personal goals. Experience and maturity have taught the importance of prioritization, leading to reassessments of time allocation to minimize wastage and optimize productivity in all aspects of life. This journey has highlighted the need for adaptability and flexibility in daily routines, as well as the importance of understanding and respecting the changing demands of life. Finnish working culture: 🇫🇮 Before dive-in, let me tell you I am working as a trainee for an event Pelasta Perämeri (Save the Bothnian Bay) at Oulun kaupunki - City of Oulu One of the most striking aspects I like, is the relaxed and stress-free working environment. Finnish people never take stress or pressure of work, they prioritize work-life balance, ensuring that their personal well-being is never compromised by work demands. And I think this is the most important thing when you really want outcomes! 🙌 Behind every successful event or project there is always processing and implementation phase, and you know what is the best thing? They always pay attention to “details” ✨. They always value collaboration and open communication, and respect others viewpoints. I loved it when my manager said to me, oh wow, I never knew this technique before, thank you for letting me know. I know, it’s not a big deal but it feels very good when a high-positioned person learns something from you ✨ Meetings are always well-structured and productive, with a clear focus on achieving the best outcomes. Very grateful to get this chance to work in Finnish workplace. Over the last few weeks we have been shining a spotlight on our ‘decade-ers’. This week, we would like to introduce you to the lovely Becky who joined us as an apprentice, and is now bossing it as our Acting Operations Manager! We asked Becky a few questions to find out why she loves her career at HARBOUR… 🌟 What changes have you seen over the years? I've seen a lot of changes over the years - one of my favourable changes is watching colleagues that you've worked with for years grow - becoming their 'best selves' is rewarding to see and the changes / impacts that brings with it across the business. Not to mention, the brilliant new faces that have been introduced into the business over the years - helping to shape the company into where we are today! 🌟 How has your career developed? Starting as an apprentice in the company, I started on the Support Team (a great entry point to the business imo!). I have always been supported in the development of my career throughout HARBOUR, which has involved moving between teams - Support Team, Project Team - Project Assistant to Junior Project Manager to Project Analyst, back to the Support Team as their Manager and then getting to where I am today - as Acting Operations Manager. 🌟 What is it like working at HARBOUR? Working at HARBOUR always has been an enjoyment, it's a great community environment that is inclusive of everyone. You know some people have those 'Sunday Blues...', well there's none of those over here! Everyone gets along really well and we all support one another to get through each day - and whatever that day has to 'offer' - often with some 'fun' added into the mix! 🌟 What do you love about your role? I recently became Acting Operations Manager at HARBOUR, I have to say I love the job and feel no 2 days are the same! I am being 'challenged' on a daily basis which is leading to personal development in so many skill areas and keeps my mind 'thinking' - which is really important to me and the biggest thing I enjoy in my role. There's always something new to uncover and I feel I have the freedom to explore what that is. Happy First Anniversary... Yay! 🎈 So there we have it.. my first work anniversary with the Slieve Russell Hotel The fastest ➊➋ months ever. From beginning my journey within the Human Resources Team, it has been a pretty crammed few months. With the completion of my CIPD Qualifications this has partnered in one way or another whilst working in a busy hotel environment. When I scroll back at all those photos, the below came to mind 💭 🔸Welcoming & onboarding many new team members to our company. 🔸Attending refresher training to support us by The HR Suite 🔸To those summer days delivering ice-cream's to the teams on the golf course🍦 🔸First Office Birthday in over two years 🎁 🔸Attending Career & Recruitment Events to promote our hotel and offering to prospective employees. 🔸Recent Annual 🎃 Carving Competition, representing the HR Team - can't take the whole credit! 🔸Seeing how our team promotes an active & healthy workplace culture, with the invite of my friend Keira Sport & Fitness Instructor to speak to the team during our Health & Wellness Initiatives in the workplace. 🔸Celebrating our team with their achievements attending and cheering them on recently at the Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) Apprenticeship & Degree Programmes -seeing the team receive the deserved recognition for their hard work🎓 🔸To the reintroduction of our Trainee & Graduate Management Programme -loved being part of this area having walked in those shoes many years ago, to ensure our employees experience the best career path within our industry. 🔸Even squeezing in a selfie with my parents on their overnight stay - yes that's Dad in a dressing robe.. 🤣 So a longer post than expected... but a great year upon review.. How has it been to start as a trainee at Barel? - It has been incredibly exciting to start a completely new job in a new country. From the first day I felt like I was part of the Barel family. We really work as a team here. 2. What is the most exciting thing you have learned so far? - For me, the most exciting part of the job is the large machines and technology we use here, in addition to the good training and follow-up I have received. 3. What did you know about Barel before you started working here? - I knew that the company was located in Norway and that they produced products for hazardous areas. Today is my first anniversary at TD and my first year working abroad. Although I faced many challenges, it was highly rewarding as I grew not only as a professional but also as a person, and I couldn't be more grateful for that. Below I wanted to share some of my lessons learned; •Get out of your comfort zone; always challenge yourself Coming to a new country is already a challenge in itself. No matter what, it's necessary to adjust to the new culture, and sometimes, it is not enough to do your best; you have to run that extra mile. •Give yourself some time to adjust Don't be hard on you, and allow yourself to make mistakes. However, take each opportunity to learn and grow. •Ask questions Sometimes, we prevent ourselves from asking questions. We don't want to be seen as annoying or waste our colleagues' time. However, when you ask questions, you show that you care about your job, that you want to learn, and that you are seeking solutions. •Your opinion matters; don't be shy and share your thoughts Although English isn't my first language, and there are times when I feel like Gloria from Modern Family -if you just knew how smart I am in Spanish!-, what matters the most is what you can bring to the table that adds value and contributes to the success of the team and the business. While English matters, your ideas are even more important! •Look for new ways of doing things If there is something that we Latins have in common, that is creativity. Being asked to deliver strong results with limited resources is challenging. However, we look outside the box and usually bring creative solutions. So, applying that creative mindset in the new workplace could be your best ally when looking for efficiencies. •Be open-minded What we were taught in our countries is not always applicable everywhere, or may not simply be the way things work in other places. So, listen carefully and be receptive. Always be a learner; you can be greatly surprised. •Ask for feedback Feedback not only clarifies expectations but also helps to promote both personal and professional growth. Ask your managers and colleagues for positive criticism, and reflect on how you can continue to improve. •Be resilient and never give up Being in a new country with a different culture or having to perform your work in a language that isn't your mother tongue can be extremely overwhelming. And while it's okay to feel this way sometimes, just remember why you are where you are, and find the "Why" that motivates you to keep going. If you are passionate about what you do, it doesn't matter all the challenges you have to face; find a way to keep improving and deliver results above and beyond. #td #tdi #workingabroad
