Just wanted to repost this again but with some added thoughts this time! Greenwashing is only the tip of the iceberg. There's green-hushing, green-lighting, green-rinsing, green-crowding etc, etc. However, one overarching commonality remains, all these types of green-[insert here] are deceptive methods and strategies employed by certain companies who think that they can hide their products/ services behind a mirage of sustainability. So... how do you spot it and stop it? It's tricky, with a multitude of news sources to scan through there's no way you could manually spot every greenwashing controversy and ESG data can often be subjective and unclear making it difficult to ascertain whether companies are 100% accurate and honest. Fortunately platforms like GaiaLens can make it a lot easier for you. The World Economic Forum have published their latest view of risks. Unsurprisingly, environmental ones dominate in the 10 year timeframe, with misinformation/disinformation being a shorter-term one (e.g. in the UK, we're seeing this around #electricvehicles, #heatpumps and even the #15minutecity concept). The interconnectedness of risks fascinates me and helpfully, #WEF have pulled together a diagram on this very topic. As a PwC new hire, I'm constantly surprised by how much more innovation interesting work is going on than it appears from the outside. From colleagues that have worked on carbon markets and climate policy for decades, to whole teams spun up to focus on nature and adaptation, to deep deep subject matter experts tasked with upskilling the wider company, to deliberate development of tech and GenAI tools for better/faster business transformation, I'm seriously impressed. Now - we don't move as fast as the startups I'm used to, and that would be a great addition 😉 - but there certainly is a lot that we (and our partners!) are doing to help businesses thrive while doing the right thing transitioning to planet positive growth.
