Guiding Peru out of of the risk zone. 80,000 residents in the city of Trujillo will now be protected from flood risks, through this life-changing project. We’ve partnered with Mace, Gleeds and the Peru National Infrastructure Authority Autoridad Nacional de Infraestructura (ANIN), to design and create a 1.2km basin, a 20km canal and stepped discharge structure, to hold, clean, slow and direct the safe flow of rainwater from the mountains, to the sea. Watch the latest ‘Faces of Change’ mini-documentary, which details this next phase in supporting the acceleration of flood defences, schools and health facilities in Peru. This tells the story of the community partnership, cultural heritage and lasting legacy of the El León Gully project, the first of 17 river defence systems to be delivered through our collaboration. I really like the approach taken to understand, safeguard and celebrate the heritage of ancient civilisations and their water management techniques, now protected through modern river defences. The unique culture of local citizens has been respected and elevated through community engagement, and you can sense a real optimism about the opportunities that safety from flooding provides. Great work Nic Merridew, Iñigo Ruiz-Apilánez and the whole Arup and UK Delivery Team.

It doesn't seem that long ago we started work on this project and now seeing the positive impact it is having on communities is so wonderful. Having lead the school implementation under this programme I understand that without implementing these larger scale flood defences and wider community infrastructure the people and assets within the communities are continually at risk for the future flood events. Huge congratulations to all those involved from UKDT and Autoridad Nacional de Infraestructura (ANIN).

Great to see this latest Faces of Change documentary and to see the construction of the flood defences to protect the residents of Trujillo. Implementation is how you really make a difference. I remember the early days doing the multi-hazard and risk studies for these catchments and gullies in Peru. Huge congratulations to all those involved from UKDT and the Autoridad Nacional de Infraestructura (ANIN) for getting this done.

did you know Peruvians are very short (average height for a man 165cm, a woman 153cm) because the country is at such a high altitude! (less oxygen) One of my friends (30 years ago) emigrated there and settled as an English language teacher and left his high paying job in London because he was likely sick to death about good hearted jokes about his height. He must have felt like a giant when he moved there 😊
