Good morning, devs 😊 Some Tuesday hiring tips of the day We’re all aware of the layoffs at numerous gaming studios and companies since last year; however, these tips should be helpful in any market conditions. Some of these can also apply to beginners who are looking to get into the gaming industry or advance from a junior level ★ Have an updated CV at hand but most importantly, if you can put together a portfolio with all the projects you had worked on and your responsibilities at the time for recruiters/companies to have a look at – this would maximize your chances of getting noticed and applies to everyone. Games published, scripts, pictures or videos of gameplay – you name it. It counts. ★ Apply for the right role – I’ve encountered this a lot & lots of people apply for roles that don’t match their expectations or experience. Put the time into checking the tech stack, keywords etc, tailor your resume to that and apply for the right roles. It’s time saving 😊 ★ Connect with the right recruiters! I’m aware a lot of people have various reasons to be unsatisfied with recruiters, however we can sometimes be your way in! Be transparent about salary expectations (controversial but we definitely want to find the right role for you – the more you get paid, the more commission we get so we don’t want to undersell you) and communicate your needs regarding your location preferences, company size, and whatever comes to mind that you like in a role! Take market advice and information/constructive criticism to improve your LinkedIn profile/CV/portfolio etc. We’ll match you with something according to your preferences as well and knowing what you like makes us remember you & send any future roles we get 😉 Win-win ★ Connect & network. Gain Industry experience (especially for beginners). Seriously, add developers, add artists, add recruiters. Go to gaming conventions, gaming events & gatherings. Get out there and meet the right people. You never know when an opportunity can arise. (Again for beginners, you can add Game Jams to the list – you can connect with fellow game devs AND make a game at the same time? Sounds like a good deal) These are just a few basic tips that I’m sure a lot of you are aware of, I will definitely post more but for now, I hope it helps. 💚 [SCREW LAY-OFFS, OUR STUDIO IS HIRING IN 2024!] 🚀 There wasn't a single month in 2022-2024 that went by, without an important announcement of talented professionals being laid off in tech or gaming industries. Teams shut down, projects cut short, people's livelihoods put at risk - it's humanly awful, and I am SO very sorry this happened to thousands of people. Yes, the challenges in user acquisition and game discoverability certainly didn't help. But I genuinely believe that STAGNATION played an important part, too.🤒 Let me explain: There's no particular interest for an 8th MOBA, 17th extraction shooter, the 445th iteration in Match-3, or another puzzle game. Cool exciting stuff is more difficult to come by - especially from big studios. And then, when cookie-cutter games don't sell (because the market is saturated) people get hurt. ❌ It's different at our studio - Northern Lights Entertainment. Julie and I are not industry insiders. We don't care about established models. We make deep games about problems that endanger our societies IRL. 🌌 Our first game (Nebulae) is a real-time strategy MMO about politics and governance. We go through the painful process of elaborating radically new gameplay loops, and integrating in-game politics (which always happen on Discord / forums) into meaningful gameplay that changes the game universe. It also brings together ideas about how our societies should (or could!) be better structured and more inclusive, in real life. Our game is a game that doesn't only chase existing players from other genres - it expands the definition of "play", and broadens the overall audience. 🤩 We applied to Y Combinator recently, and (regardless of admission) will be finalising our current fundraising round in early 2024. We're SO excited to be able to extend permanent contracts to our past and future team members, currently waiting in the wings (from interns to VP-level!). Seeing that there are career opportunities for a company such as HoYoverse is interesting. I'm assuming that most of the company's openings are meant to be in-person jobs either in Singapore or in the United States. But, the question becomes, does HoYoverse ever offer opportunities to work remotely? What about part-time? This inquiring mind would like to know how the process works.
