With its vivid colours, impeccable quality, striking designs and rich history, Murano Glass is world-renowned and a favourite fixture of luxury hotels such as the Four Seasons and designer shops like Dolce & Gabbana. Yet even today, its “recipe for success” remains a mystery. Over the centuries, the trade secrets and particular mixture of quartz sand, lime and soda ash used are passed down only through generations of Muranese glassmaking families.
Murano, an island in Venice, has been home to glass masters for centuries, even as early as the year 982. But it wouldn’t be until the 1200s that the island would be designated as the centre of Venetian glass production to develop the trade and more importantly — protect the craft’s secrets from competitors. A tradition was born and the art flourished.
Murano glass masters would eventually pioneer countless sculpting, fluting and decorating techniques. Over the centuries that followed, the island became the centre of luxury glass production and held the monopoly in European glassmaking. In the 15th century, Angelo Barovier, from one of the island’s most esteemed glassmaking families, made perhaps the most important advancement to the craft — the invention of Cristallo: the first, truly transparent glass.
