With all of the pontetial uses of generative AI tools in entertainment, let’s narrow focus to one particular topic… dubbing. Do you enjoy watching dubbed or subtitled films? Some people don’t mind, I’m one of them, however that isn’t always the case. There are plenty of films and tv shows I’d love for friends and family to watch, but they aren’t interested if they’re dubbed or subbed. And you know what… that’s totally normal. We experience language from a cognitive, auditory and visual perspective. So if one of those three elements aren’t intact it can disrupt communication. But what if the visual element of dubbing had perfectly matched mouth movements to the new language? For example - a native German film looked and sounded like it was in English. And what if we didn’t replace localization houses and voice actors, but enhanced the quality of their work? If that sounds good to you, then we agree. That’s the Flawless artist centric approach.

Does AI make it easier to get mediocre voiceover tracks? Yes. Does it make it easier to get better than mediocre voiceover tracks? No. There isn’t a voice actor I know working really hard to be mediocre. I recently came across a post on x that made me think. It was about a shift in a major streaming service's commercial voiceover from a beloved human voice to an AI-generated one. The post described the AI voice as totally unpleasant and how much she misses the human voice. She explains that the human voice actor's tone reminds her of her favorite radio DJ. It really struck a chord with me, and I found out how authentic human voices impact our emotions.🎙️ It doesn't matter how short the ad is. Even casual listeners, who aren't involved in voiceover work, could clearly see that the AI voice sounded a little unnatural. This is surprising, considering a large company opted for this approach. 😮 My own experience mirrors this sentiment. I've voiced commercials for a software company where sequels were handed over to AI-generated voices. I was very sad to see the CM. However, it is my point of view as a professional voice over artist. It's crucial to recognize when AUDIENCES express dissatisfaction and discomfort. This feedback is vital as it could prompt advertising agencies to understand the irreplaceable value of human warmth and emotion in voiceovers. 🌟 Let's hope the trend leans towards genuine human connections that audiences worldwide cherish and respond to. ❤️As voice over artists, our craft extends beyond the microphone. It's about elevating the expressiveness in our voice over and weaving genuine communication into our daily lives. By doing so, we enrich not only our performances but also the emotional depth we bring to every project.
