🦃 Gobble, gobble... Today's turkeys in the US are more than double the size compared to 1929. According to Business Insider, farmed turkeys in the US in the 1950s were the same size as those found in the wild. This infographic from Business Insider was published back in 2019, but it's still very relevant. Growing demand led turkey farmers to breed birds for their size and speed of growth. The consequences have been quite significant. For instance, male turkeys have become so heavy that they are unable to mate naturally with the hens. We might want to celebrate the growth of poultry but we most note the insignificance this has on the animals and on human beings, through Genetic Modified Organisms (GMO), pastoral yield is sure but no one talks about the disadvantages of modifying the genes, the effect it has on the health of the animal, the flesh(meat) in terms of quality and consumption (the same has shown in fish feeds and their bodies) and finally the long term health deficiencies open to consumers of the meat. It is at this point that Agricultural and Food regulation be implemented to checkmate the overpowers of biotechnology in food as well as meeting Good Manufacturing Practices(GMPs) available to pharma and biotech companies, also public health stakeholders should work with stakeholders in food, agriculture, biotech and food innovation to ensure adequate regulation and better means of innovation in making food healthier for consumption,there is a right way to doing things like this. Likewise Consumer Protection bodies should be on watch because the health of humans are at stake, biotech , food and Agric laws must be a major priority. Hey there farmers! Today, we’re talking turkey (pun intended). Seriously though, raising turkeys can be a lucrative business, but only if you know the secrets. First, make sure you provide a comfortable “hotel” for your turkeys. No, I don’t mean a 5-star hotel, but a clean and safe coop will do. Next, feed them well, but don’t overdo it. You don’t want your turkeys to become “gbolas” (that’s “fat” in Yoruba). And please, make sure they have access to clean water. You don’t want your turkeys to be “kondo” (that’s “thirsty” in Hausa). Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “But I’m not a turkey expert.” Relax, I got you. Just remember, turkeys are like your in-laws - they require attention, care, and a little bit of patience. ❄ This week our team visited suppliers in Greenland. 🐟 The fishing industry in Greenland is very important to the national economy of Greenland and local food supply. It is the source of many people's livelihoods all across the country, employing some 6,500 out of a national population of 56,452 people. 🐟 Fishing exports from Greenland in the past 20 years are accounted at about 90% of the country's total exports with international firms finding it a profitable business. 🐟 The contribution of fishing industries to the economy of Greenland as a whole is estimated to be more than 50%; contribution to gross national income of the country is reported to be as high as 20%. 🐟 The fish that dominate the Greenlandic fishing industry are mainly shrimp, cod, halibut and salmon. #fishbusiness #greenlandfish #suppliers #timeteams

Just following up on the Anti Hail Nets post, as we kn ow nets are widely used here in Australia and New Zealand primarily to keep birds especially the parrot family and some wild life out, the effectiveness is being questioned along with their cost. As expected the Anti Hail Nets are costed about 15,000- 20,000 Euro per hectare which given the size of some of the climate (plots) that this is not excessive costs compared to loosing your entire crop but for bigger producers these numbers becoming eye watering. The IANO only approved the use of the nets in 2018 but they have proven to be up to 90% effective in providing solid hail protection yet their implementation and roll out remains very low.
