Our pavement infrastructure is a critical national asset that impacts military mobility, the transport of goods, and personal travel. However, current pavements do not provide the desired durability, requiring frequent maintenance that results in a high logistical burden and elevated carbon footprint. For the U.S. military, which demands strong pavements that can support its heavy vehicles and aircraft, the high volume of repairs means heavy machinery and repair materials must regularly be moved to far-flung locations. Responding to this need, a partnership between the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the University of Illinois’s Center for Transportation Research seeks to use novel electron beam accelerator technology to create more durable pavements. The unique collaboration combines Fermi Lab’s deep knowledge in particle acceleration science and technology with ERDC’s extensive expertise in military pavement research dating back to World War II. This effort will dramatically improve pavement strength, toughness and service time, potentially saving the Department of Defense hundreds of millions of dollars, while also reducing the large carbon footprint from the pavement industry. The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) welcomed guests from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and U.S. Army DEVCOM’s Army Research Lab to the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory. The visit focused on future collaboration between the research organizations and CERL’s Science and Technology portfolio. "These meetings are vital to growing our partnerships with other laboratories and federal agencies," said Alli Young, a research architect and CERL Associate Technical Director. “With related projects and goals, these collaborations are an opportunity to advance research ideas and work to reduce gaps in knowledge or capability." Clean water can often be an afterthought in our daily lives, but not for researchers at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), who are performing state-of-the-art science and engineering to address sustainable water infrastructure challenges, such as providing clean water, as well as removing contaminants and extracting resources from water. This research space is focused on emerging contaminants, which are a consequence of high technology and advanced chemicals. To meet this challenge, ERDC is implementing a multidisciplinary approach that harnesses material technologies and processes that not only treat and remove contaminants from various water sources, but also target specific contaminants. Digital engineering is indeed a game changer! One key element to keep in mind - not to do business the old way with these new tools but rather leverage the new digital engineering tools to fundamentally change how we do acquisition going forward!!!

The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering announced the first 4 #APFIT awards from the FY24 round. 2 submissions were selected from the United States Marine Corps , 1 from the United States Air Force and 1 from the US Navy. (https://lnkd.in/eHAb4Fwg) From publicly available information, to date, OUSD(R&E) announced 25 APFIT selections from FY22-FY24 with a total value of $292,040,000. That $292M is all going to Accelerate the Fielding and Procurement of Innovative Technologies that can benefit the warfighter. APFIT targets technologies that will make a high impact to the warfighter, have applicability across the DoD, and have funding planned to sustain the technologies beyond the APFIT funding. We have to wait until the #FY24budget actually passes before we see the remainder of the FY24 APFIT selections but here is the current selection breakdown since the start of APFIT: #USMC: 6 selections totaling $67,050,000 #Navy: 4 selections totaling $44,400,000 USSOCOM: 3 selections totaling $40,000,000 US Army: 3 selections totaling $39,970,000 #USAF: 3 selections totaling $33,550,000 Defense Innovation Unit (DIU): 2 selections totaling $26,770,000 United States Space Force: 2 selections totaling $20,300,000 Missile Defense Agency: 1 selection totaling $10,000,00 Defense Logistics Agency: 1 selection totaling $10,000,000 One major difference between APFIT and other #DoD programs designed to bring new technologies to the warfighter (#SBIR #TACFI #STRATFI #SBIRCatalyst, etc.) is APFIT is strictly #procurement dollars, no #RDTE.
