With a heavy heart, I share the news of my mom's passing. She was an incredibly successful HR professional and was the visionary founder of Ultimate HR, a firm that provided outsourced services to small businesses. Beyond being a dedicated professional, she was my professional mentor, guiding me into HR and helping me navigate the complexities of working with people. We enjoyed exchanging stories from the HR field, and I always knew who to call with a work issue. We shared many laughs, tears, and frustrations from working in an emotionally draining field. In my first management role, my mom shared "Lori's Rules of Engagement," a guide she created for her teams to help them understand her leadership style. She encouraged me to make it my own, and I've integrated many of her lessons into my own leadership style. It was a lengthy list as she accumulated much knowledge and advice throughout her career, but I'm sharing a few here that are timeless. I'm so appreciative of her guidance and mentorship, and my hope is for us to all model some of “Lori's Rules” in our own careers. - Bring possible solutions with every problem. - I will challenge you and I will push you - in a good and healthy way to help you grow. - I will screw up. I will take ownership and I will apologize. If you think I screwed up or made a poor decision, tell me. - Be a resource. We are a service department and employees are our customers. We need to provide excellent customer experiences. - Be a model of integrity. Walk the talk, do what you say you'll do, keep your promises. - Maintain a work/life balance. You are the only one that has control in that area. Whatever you are willing to give the company, the company will take! - Work hard, play daily, laugh often.
