I find it intriguing that many people in the pursuit of personal success often fixate on the same principle that plagued some of the brightest statistical minds during the allied WWII effort. Among the many things that they were researching, one was where to strategically place armor to increase survivability while still minimizing fuel usage and impact on maneuverability. After studying the aircraft that returned from sorties, most statisticians determined that the wings, tail and fuselage took most of the damage. Thus, this must be where we reinforce the aircraft. When this evidence was presented to Abraham Wald, he said, "The armor doesn’t go where the bullet holes are. It goes where the bullet holes aren’t: on the engines." It appears to me that in the pursuit of personal success, we tend to look towards the successful flights and armor ourselves based on the lessons learned from the positive outcomes and the turbulence they have experienced during their ascension. Counterintuitive? What are your thoughts?
