Marx Biotech (7731 TT) has announced a strategic alliance with the popular live-streaming influencer Sammi Li, also known as "Diudiu 33", to enhance its live-streaming business and develop its fifth brand. This partnership aims to boost Marx Biotech's market presence in both domestic and Southeast Asian markets by integrating online and offline channels, diversifying brands, and targeting segmented markets. Marx Biotech's OMO (Online Merge Offline) strategy includes a B2B system that manages over 3,400 pharmacy channels, helping to increase profitability and market reach. The company recently launched a live-streaming sales website to further engage with social media audiences. Diudiu 33, with a sales record of NT$200 million in a single month and 1.55 million followers, will promote Marx Biotech’s products and her own new brand through live streams. This collaboration is expected to significantly boost sales, particularly during peak shopping events. Marx Biotech, managing four brands—Taizaku, Phargoods, Inyouso, and SnowIOU—reported a 162.04% revenue increase in 2023, reaching NT$290 million, and a 314.01% YoY increase in the first four months of this year. The company aims to capture 20% of pharmacy health product sales by expanding its product line and acquiring small to mid-sized health brands, targeting adding 3-10 new brands annually. It's rare to find a sponsored media event and cash-for-posting that non-credentialed nutrition influencers eschew. WW International (formerly Weight Watchers) held a "GLP-1 hype house" in a Los Angeles mansion to promote its new weight loss drug prescription business (reported by Bloomberg on February 20.) The company contacted influencers nationwide to offer what is reported by one influencer, $750 to $1200 per social media post to promote the event and the budding business. To WW's dismay, many of the folks they contacted had followed the company's former points system (each food eaten is worth a certain number of points that is not to be exceeded in a day or week) and claimed it had led them to "disordered eating." As a Gen X woman, I remember females in my family being on a constant on-and-off ramp with Weight Watchers. Living in a rural area and despite there being a mandatory 'in front of everyone' weekly weighing, I saw my mother and others forming friendships and a sense of shared purpose that actually may have helped them achieve and maintain a healthy weight. The company's founder, Jean Nidetch, a housewife and mother living in Queens, began Weight Watchers in 1963 because she wanted to be able to ask questions and share in a weight loss experience. Weight Watchers did this effectively for many people for a long time. But times have changed. Information is no longer exchanged in person in a meeting where people know and support one another but rather blasted to anyone who will listen to the testimonials of a very limited number of people. The original spirit of the company seems to have morphed over time from "Let's get together and learn how to achieve a healthy weight" to "Buy our medications (and by the way, you're likely to have side effects and they cost $1000 per month)." Once people take GLP-1s and lose weight, many haven't formed an eating plan to maintain that weight loss. So the real, lifelong healthy eating knowledge and skills are not there for weight maintenance. This is definitely an influencer marketing fail. Weight Watchers recently sponsored an influencer experience called the GLP-1 house (since coined by many the "Ozempic House"), which probably should have been a warning sign to begin with. It was a day long experience in a Los Angeles mansion, where a dozen influencers came to bake muffins, take selfies and talk about how Ozempic has changed their lives. This does need some context as most people would immediately question why Weight Watchers would have anything to do with the Ozempic conversation. The brand has a new obesity drug service and has been working with influencers to help bust the misconceptions and stigma around GLP-1 medications. And I'm fine with that. But where this GLP-1 house went very wrong is... 🏠 I'm not sure a mansion in Los Angeles is the right setting for a conversation around obesity drugs 🍳The experience featured branded aprons with the phrase “it’s giving protein” and an appearance was made by the drag queen Kim Chi. It all feels random, cringe and out of touch. ⛔ Influencers who received an offer to be part of the experience are speaking out saying that they were asked to promote the service without actually having used the service I don't want to analyze whether or not the brand should be in the obesity space. Some will say ask how a dieting service can co-exist with weight-loss shots, others will say that the brand has struggled for years and their acquisition of Sequence was a bright spot. Either way this was an influencer campaign that went very wrong, and it stems from an activation that doesn't align with the values of the core consumer. When activating experiences, it's easy to try and build something that's trendy and social pretty. But at the end of the day you just need the experience to deliver on real consumer value.
