Today, we commemorate the historic impact of Juneteenth, a day that holds profound significance in the journey toward freedom and equality. 🙌🏾 On this day in 1865, enslaved Black Americans in Texas finally received the news of their emancipation, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. #TheMorningInclusive As a practitioner who leads Belonging on a global scale, I am always inspired by the stories of those who have fought for justice and equality in the face of oppression and discrimination. One such person is Ida B. Wells, a pioneering journalist, activist, and co-founder of the NAACP. Wells was born into slavery in 1862 and became an outspoken leader of the anti-lynching movement in the 1890s, exposing the horrific violence against Black Americans and challenging the myths that justified it. She also advocated for women’s suffrage, civil rights, and economic empowerment for the Black community. She was fearless, relentless, and influential, using her pen and her voice to challenge the status quo and demand change. As we celebrate Black History Month, I invite you to learn more about Ida B. Wells and her legacy. You can read her autobiography, Crusade for Justice, or watch the Smithsonian Channel documentary, Afrofuturism: The Origin Story, which features her as one of the trailblazers of Black futures. You can also visit the Ida B. Wells-Barnett Museum in her birthplace of Holly Springs, Mississippi, or see her portrait at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Ida B. Wells once said, "The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them." Terminology such as: 1️⃣ Intersectionality 2️⃣ Code-switching 3️⃣ Colorism 4️⃣ Professionalism 5️⃣ How blackness is viewed differently around the world 👉🏾 It is crucial to learn about the history and experiences of black people with intersecting identities such as queer black inventors, black individuals with disabilities who contributed to accessibility standards, and black women who challenged the status quo. 👉🏾 Additionally, it is important to acknowledge that the black experience varies for individuals living in different parts of the world, where black people may be a majority, leading to distinct lived experiences. As we celebrate Black History Month and acknowledge the legacy and accomplishments of Black Americans, which have shaped the society we live in today, we must set aside time for introspection. It's critical we recognize the unique—and near insurmountable—challenges faced by Black, Queer people in the workplace and beyond. Trailblazers, icons, and everyday individuals have pushed forward to advance causes, communities, and movements, in the face of systemic challenges that other people have not, do not, and will not face. This month and beyond, we must be intentional and authentic in how we approach, discuss, and address these challenges. Join us as we amplify Black, Queer voices, discuss the power of intersectionality, and emphasize why a movement only succeeds when everyone is brought along. 🔥🖤Greetings for Black History Month! 🔥🖤 Never should we undervalue the strength of tenacity and perseverance. Hopefully one day society will completely eradicate racism, negative associations and perceptions of Black people and other ethnic minorities, not only in the workplace, but all over the world. The goals of Black history month are to advance equality, highlight the value of human rights, and, finally, give Black history-makers the tools they need to tell their own stories that will challenge negative physical and social associations that are made with not only black people, but also other ethnic minorities. The actions and resilience of civil rights pioneers, activists and influencers over the course of hundreds of years have demonstrated challenges, triumphs, and willpower resulting in an improved, but not completely changed society. We still have a long way to go in improving things and creating equal opportunities that celebrate the successes of all ethnicities and drive balanced perceptions for all. What drives me is personally is fairness and equality.
