I'm no longer the best copywriter or marketer on the WCS Fire team. Nor am i the best sales person or account manager. There is someone on the team better than me at almost anything you can think of. So the question that kept me up for many nights was: " What is my value as GM then ?" I think its this: I need to read between the lines to see patterns nobody else in the team does. My job is to predict the future before its here. I learn new skills everyday, and teach them to my team. I pilot new technologies, strategies, and business skills. I need to be the Olympic torch of the team, whose main job is just to never let the fire go out (will use a fire extinguisher 😁 ) My personal growth must equal or exceed the pace of our company's growth - I am Glue, full stop. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐫 When I was a young copywriter, I saw my job as being to have an idea and to try and get it unscathed past all the people between conception and its appearance on air, in print, or whatever. It was about protecting it from attrition, never about improvement. Getting it past the CD without any changes. Past the account team. Past the Planner. Past the client. Past Compliance. Past Clearcast. Now I see it differently. I still don’t believe in doing things by committee. But I do believe in listening, discussion, dialogue. I remember being told that when Paul Arden had created something, he would go around Saatchi & Saatchi, showing it to people and asking only one question. “𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙬𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨?” Now, it’s entirely possible that everyone was too intimidated by the great man to tell him anything but, “It’s genius, Paul” But the principle is a sound one for mere mortals. Collaboration was a cowardly thing in occupied France but it’s pretty smart one in business. Not to kill an idea but to improve it. Not to dilute an execution but to enhance it. Not to protect but to build. Coming up with creative marketing ideas isn’t about starting with a blank page. The answers are there: in the brief, in the experience and insights of the team, in the zeitgeist. One of the best advice pieces of advice I was ever given was from Richard Seymour at Seymour Powell. “𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨.
