We’re celebrating NAIDOC Week. 7 – 14 July marks the national celebration and recognition of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The #NAIDOC2024 theme is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud.’ It invites us all celebrate the strength and vitality of First Nations communities and amplify Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices. Central to this is ensuring First Nations people have a greater say and stake moving forward. This includes collaboration on research and development, ownership of projects as well as shared and inclusive benefits from transformative projects across Traditional land and in First Nations communities. NAIDOC Week 2024 (7-14 July), with the theme 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud,' celebrates the resilience and spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. For me, this week is more than just a celebration—it's a personal mission. As I look forward to my trip to the Northern Territory, I'm reminded of how important it is to immerse myself in these rich cultures. I'm continuing with my commitments to better understand, better connect, and take a stand so we continue to move forward: 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞: I am continuing to educate myself about First Nations histories and contemporary issues. I'm watching The Last Daughter, a documentary feature film about Brenda's journey to uncover the truth about her past and reconcile the two sides of her family. 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Continue to embrace the hard conversations and remain active in discussions about reconciliation and support for First Nations people. If you are celebrating NAIDOC Week, please share your plans and experiences in the comments! If you are looking for ideas, you can find a local NAIDOC Week event near you. It's NAIDOC Week 2024! And proud Samuawgadhalgal, Torres Strait artist Deb Belyea is the winner of this year's NAIDOC Week poster competition – here is what Deb says of the winning work, Urapun Muy. “‘Urapun Muy’, from the Kalaw Kawaw Ya dialect of the Top Western Islands of the Torres Strait, means ‘One Fire’. The title of this work pays homage to Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people everywhere, as we all have that one fire; our passion for our culture. In this work, I have depicted the hands of our ancestors that have carefully dropped a burning ember on to a fire. This ember burns hot with intensity, stoking the flames, as it combines with the new fire. The linear detail shows the energy and power as cultural knowledge is transferred from our ancestors to us today. Culture is the fire that gives us knowledge, wisdom and purpose. It is our responsibility to maintain, practice, and pass on our fire to our future generations. After all, Culture keeps us Blak, Loud and Proud.” At #AscottAustralia, we are committed to listening more, learning more, and forming more partnerships that will support First Nations communities in meaningful ways. We are striving for a future that honours our First Peoples. #NAIDOC2024 #NAIDOCWeek #BlakLoudProud

As Australia celebrates NAIDOC week this week, it is worth appreciating the rich history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and also an opportunity to learn about one of the oldest continuous living cultures on Earth 🌍. 💎 New Governance Requirements for Indigenous Data: Recently, Australian Public Service agencies adopted the Framework for Governance of Indigenous Data. Co-designed with Indigenous partners, this framework ensures better access to government-held Indigenous data for First Nations Australians. It emphasizes collaboration, capability-building, and an inclusive data system. 💎 These governance requirements aim to contribute directly to ‘closing the gap’ by enhancing data accessibility, quality management and ethical use of indigenous data, and promoting inclusivity via ensured respectful collaboration and decision making for uplifting these communities. Let’s honor NAIDOC Week by championing Indigenous cultures, supporting data sovereignty, and working together to close the gap. 🙌🏽 #NAIDOCWeek #IndigenousData #ClosingTheGap

This NAIDOC Week, we honour the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations cultures. The 2024 theme, "Keep the Fire Burning: Blak, Loud, and Proud," reflects the resilience and pride of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Fire symbolises connection to Country, community, and the rich traditions that have been passed down through generations. We are committed to supporting and amplifying Indigenous voices, not just during NAIDOC Week but throughout the year. We strive to build meaningful and respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, ensuring that their knowledge and perspectives are at the heart of our operations. Here are the five guiding principles that drive our approach: - Recognise, prioritise and embed the unique knowledge and wisdom of Traditional Owners, which includes caring for and speaking for Country. - Establish a renewed relationship with First Peoples in Victoria to ensure that First Peoples can share in the benefits of Victoria’s renewable energy transformation. - Empower Traditional Owners and Victorian Aboriginal communities to identify their evolving aspirations and determine their relationship with the SEC. - Embed governance principles, policies and processes to ensure the collective support and decision-making of First Peoples. - Ensure Victoria’s energy transition preserves, restores and strengthens the rights of Traditional Owners and does not diminish the rights that have been secured to date. We encourage everyone to reflect on the theme and find ways to celebrate the rich heritage and future of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Together, we can keep the fire of culture and pride burning bright. Let’s work together to build a future where respect, equity, and inclusion are at the forefront. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g9kZmcP3 #NAIDOC2024 #NAIDOCWeek #BlakLoudProud
