With 1 in 3 Australians homes having roof top solar, the importance of community batteries continues to grow. Ausgrid's Group Executive Distributed Services, Rob Amphlett Lewis, spoke at this week’s Energy Storage Summit, discussing the role community batteries can play within the distribution network and their advantages in enabling a more dynamic energy network. With more homes producing solar in the middle of the day, at a time where demand is low, Community Batteries are able to soak up excess solar, storing it to release later and stabilising the grid. They improve network quality, whilst allowing more homes to install solar, and by releasing this into the grid at peak times help place downward pressure on electricity bills. ICYMI: The U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) challenged the community solar industry to nearly triple buildout by 2025 during last week’s National Community Solar Partnership Annual Summit, and we at Chaberton are here for it. That would put the U.S. at 20GW of community solar.    We recently celebrated our milestone of having 100 solar sites under contract with a capacity of 650MWDC in just four years. And we are committed to increasing our growth dramatically and helping the DoE make a run at its goal.     During the summit, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) issued a report called “Technical Potential and Meaningful Benefits of Community Solar in the United States,” which confirms that community solar has significant upside that we as a nation are only starting to tap. In fact, the NREL says the U.S. has the potential to add nearly 1 Terawatt of community solar capacity, which could save customers billions of dollars on their electricity bills. This would serve tens of millions of lower- to middle-income households, generate billions of dollars in grid resilience and drive billions of dollars of economic benefits into host communities.
