BCW launches Clean Energy Action Coalition If there is one subject virtually all business leaders agree on, it is that New York State’s energy landscape is changing. The challenge is that the paths forward are numerous, confusing and often are at odds with the practical realities of implementation costs and technological challenges. The Business Council of Westchester has spent the last decade dealing with the rapidly evolving energy picture, and in an effort to bring clarity and a solidified approach from the business community has launched a major new initiative. BCW members Dan Singer, President and CEO of Robison, who with Ron Kamen - EarthKind Energy Consulting and Michael Murphy of Murphy Brothers Contracting, Inc took the lead in initiating the session, emphasized that “we’re looking to the future. We can’t be deniers; we have to be realistic. There are many great energy-related ideas, but we need a coalition to bring them together. This is a starting point." Greater Manchester Combined Authority and their 10 boroughs worked in collaboration with Energy Systems Catapult to develop Local Area Energy Plans (LAEP) across the whole city. The 10 LAEPs are already galvanising action, investment and innovation in Greater Manchester as they explore the unique local characteristics of each borough, including the types of buildings, transport systems, local industry, local energy generation, storage and distribution assets to help better understand how our energy could be generated, distributed and used in the future. Four times as many local authorities are taking climate action by pursuing #LocalAreaEnergyPlans compared to two years ago, according to a new report by Energy Systems Catapult. A new report by Community Power Agency has found that the Australian community energy sector is delivering significant social, environmental and economic impacts. From surveying 55 groups, around half of the sector, they found that groups had raised $86.8 million in funding for community energy infrastructure and that their projects produced over 19,000 MWh of clean energy – enough for 2,800 homes for a year. The projects have also avoided 13,947 tonnes of CO2-e, which is the equivalent of removing 7,748 cars from the road for a year. There is a huge amount of potential in the sector to deliver even bigger impacts, however, community energy groups face challenges such as a lack of funding. Municipalities across the country are realizing that the best path to clean, affordable, reliable, and resilient energy is to become energy independent. 32 of the 50 states, where public utilities are available, have lower average rates than those offered by the incumbent investor owned utility. In 2022 DTE, the incumbent investor owned utility in Ann Arbor, had profits of over $5.5B. This is money coming directly out of the pockets of the residents and businesses there. In the six years between 10/2017 and 10/2023 Ann Arbor residents saw an increase of 36.9% in their rate per kwh. By the way, even though DTE claims to be the best option for meeting renewable energy goals, they only produce about 8.76% of their energy from renewable sources, mainly wind, with very little solar. If it's not obvious, IOUs are going to make this transition as difficult as possible, starting with massive anti-public utility campaigns explaining how expensive the transition will be. They are not wrong, but they are also a major factor in the expense considering the legal fees associated with municipalities gaining the right to even purchase the distribution systems in their communities. This is merely a scare tactic. Feasibility studies across the country have shown that many, if not most, transitions to public utilities will turn up being cost effective for the residents. In the long run it makes sense to get out from under the thumbs of these IOUs. On the quest for profits, people become things, things like numbers, things like tools, tools that just need to be greased every so often. Talk to your city council members today, not just about clean energy, but about independence, reliability, resilience, affordability, community, and equity.
