Colleagues from our Hermsdorf production facility in Germany recently organised a wonderful handicraft event in partnership with a local kindergarten. The project involved the construction of insect 'hotels' alongside twelve enthusiastic children aged 3-5 years. The experience was an enjoyable one for all the participants - and it presented a wonderful opportunity to speak to the children about the importance of caring for the environment and respecting and protecting nature. #EnvironmentalEducation #InsectHotels #ProtectNature #Hermsdorf

SUDs - water sensitive urban design and planning intervention can contribute immensely in fixing the broken water cycle. Such interventions in Schools should also involve teacher and students and these living labs can contribute in teaching - learning to sensitise young minds - about water resource conservation and management .
Implementing SuDS in school settings can convert playgrounds and outdoor areas into educational hubs fostering environmental awareness, health, and well-being. Incorporating interactive elements like ArborFlow Tree pits, rain gardens, and planters amplifies SuDS' educational benefits for students and staff. Lavender Hill in the Cape Flats, South Africa, is an active site for drug trade-related gang wars and shootings. The systemic violence affects the lives of children who are directly or indirectly victimised. Envirolove creates guided hikes with safety and structure in the outdoors, here adolescents can connect with their natural heritage, develop emotional competencies and define their future aspirations. By employing ethnographic methods of participant observation, structured interviews, and analysing conversations with children who participate in the guided hikes, the research study asks how children living in violent geographies experience the outdoors in relation to their everyday spaces -such as - homes, schools, communities. It also asks how time spent in nature changes the way they think about their future. Over the last three years, the guided hikes have provided high school students with a space to develop networks of support and aspirations. Insights from the study would help other organizations operating globally design outdoor educational interventions that could potentially benefit children. Our initial findings suggests that for the children, safe spaces in nature impact their experience of space and physical movement, and their psychological experiences of freedom, introspection and building relationships. In the hikes, the physical path walked opens children up to wider spaces in nature, contrasting their limited physical movements at their often densely inhabited homes and schools. Our ongoing research has been supported by Deepika Ganesh, currently a PhD candidate University of Michigan- School for Environment and Sustainability. Her contributions over the last three years and been instrumental in developing Envirolove’s Lavender Hill Youth Programme. #Envirolove #youth #nature #knowledge #change

In 2018, The Wilderness Society developed a public lands curriculum that adds critical historical context for conservation efforts, including institutionalized bias. It is designed to add nuance to “our understanding of how race, culture, gender, and class affect how people engage with public lands” as a step towards bridging divides between the conservation movement and those who have often been excluded. #publiclands https://ow.ly/fb8Y50PLEkZ

What is the economics of happiness? "...it’s important to note that non-material resources are infinite, and a slower, less resource intensive economy creates multiple opportunities for Gross National Happiness (GNH) to flourish, as we cultivate non-commodified, communal pleasures including relationships, arts, crafts, slow living, time in nature, adventure, sports, ritual, ceremony, cooking, mutual aid, community, building, gardening, learning for its own sake, volunteerism, service, etc. Learning, appreciating, and adopting these ways of being start in the home and in the school and require support from all sectors of society." Doctoral researcher in ecosocial work @ Glasgow Caledonian University | Founder Endo.Politisch.Aktiv. @ Endometriosis Association Germany
❓ What are social workers’ experiences of ecosocial work practice in community gardens? And what role do the relations that are forged and fostered between humans and other-than-human beings play in the context of these gardens? I've talked to social workers in England in an attempt to answer these questions and you can read the results now in my new paper "Beyond the human – Garden communities in community gardens". I'm so excited that this got finally published as part of a special issue titled "Social Work Future(s) — What social work does the world need now?" You can check out my paper and the entire special issue in the link below, it's open access! https://lnkd.in/eTmcw5ru #ecosocialwork #communitygardens #socialworkresearch #openaccess

Working with companies and wildlife organisations to improve Britain's countryside for nature and people.
Great news on improved access to nature for young people. The balancing act of charging for the value delivered by nature versus instilling the love through open access is a tricky one, but if people don't value nature they won't pay for access or support policies that increase funding for nature. Perhaps more importantly, this is a sign that we don't have sufficient access to nature of a high enough quality for the RSPB to feel this is necessary to help engage younger generations. https://lnkd.in/ev9VCg4E

The Seeing Friends project provides opportunities for social connection, physical activity, and wider community integration and this grant will support the expansion of this project. Activities include community-based social ‘hubs’ held in local venues, allowing services to be taken to where people live, meeting regularly for lunch, or around a shared interest such as swimming, gardening, or reading. Regular, in-person contact with other visually impaired people counters isolation for participants, who grow in confidence and self-esteem, supporting their independence and wider community involvement, empowering them to try new things and forge new, lasting connections.
