In Neukolln, Berlin, Germany, a former brewery, has been transformed into an adaptive reuse project, with a circular economy focus. Transforming into a combination of a contemporary art gallery, and long term affordable housing, the project breathes new life, into a long time abandoned site in a lower income urban community. With sustainability at the forefront of their design, the developers worked with local architects specializing in recycled adaptive reuse projects. The hope was to transform this project, with as little outside material as possible, while also maintaining the originality of the space. In one of the projects interior spaces, this mindset is clearly defined as 70% of the materials used to retrofit the interior spaces are recycled from materials onsite. The space is now home to a co-working space that focuses on socially, environmentally and financially sustainable businesses and initiatives. This project experimented in just about every way imaginable, when it came to its design, construction, and implementation. Unable to locate a singular contractor who could handle the overarching circular design factor, a collaboration of skilled and unskilled laborers from all different backgrounds, worked together to create a sort of “Frankenstein” of a development. With materials throughout the buildings brought in from the dismantlement of multiple sites across the region, the process was not an easy feat. But the commitment of the various parties involved adds an extra level of uniqueness to the project. This project, gave the opportunity for the developers to look into the growing ecosystem of recycled material sourcing and transportation in Europe. With this knowledge, it may make projects such as these easier and even more sustainable in the future.
