Last time we wrote about Sydney’s supply of outdated B-grade office towers, the response was galvanising. It’s no surprise this topic attracts lively debate, as the built environment industries race to juggle the combining forces of high office vacancy rates, housing supply pressures and increased regulation for sustainable design solutions. The adaptive reuse of our older buildings seems to be our best foot forward. This is our second article in a series that looks at what it would take to convert an outdated Sydney office building into a contemporary hybrid tower that incorporates a range of prefabricated Build-to-Rent apartments. One of our design teams, led by Principal Marko Damic, conducted a life cycle analysis and carbon assessment on this theoretical project. Their findings demonstrate how addressing the housing crisis can also benefit the environment. We're putting theory into practice. Last week, Alexandra Lawlor joined the panel at Property Council NSW's event, "Making Adaptive Reuse Work." The discussion focused on navigating the planning hurdles and regulatory complexities of adaptive reuse, alongside the well-known carbon savings it offers. A more sustainable architectural future requires intense collaboration across industries, we’re committed to knowledge exchange in the industry as we collectively face this global challenge. Let us know your thoughts! What challenges do you see facing our cities today? We want to hear from you. Amazing to see how fast this topic is gaining traction! We have some perfect solutions within our range that complement the modular approach, as well as understanding the carbon contributions from an embodied and operational perspective. Furthermore, as we see more appeal for decentralised solutions to suit your exact case study, we are bringing innovative solutions to Australia that fit this mould.

Interesting to see schools also taking over these spaces.
