Happy Friday all! This week, The Balmoral Group Australia director, Grant Leslie FIML, was inducted as an Australian Water Association NSW Water Legend. This honor acknowledges his immense contributions to the water industry and his commitment to a sustainable water future. In his acceptance speech, Grant shared valuable insights, drawing from his experience. He emphasized the increasing challenges in addressing issues like drought, noting, 'As we have already optimized our resources, for example, through water efficient measures, the path forward demands making larger investment decisions'. This perspective highlights the need for bold and innovative approaches in our ongoing challenge with water security. Grant also offered advice that resonates deeply, both professionally and personally: 'Be the change you want to see and follow your passion'. His remarkable journey, from humble beginnings in the Far West, spanned six diverse careers in the water industry, and stands as a testament to this ethos. As we celebrate Grant's well-deserved recognition, we are inspired by his commitment and vision. His words serve as a reminder of our responsibility and potential in shaping a sustainable water future. In this edition we have articles on reclaimed asphalt pavements, measuring snow depths using satellite data, the impacts the increased use of AI has on data centers and water consumption, and more. I’m looking forward to the Institute of Chartered Foresters conference in April, when I will be chairing the Landscape Institute session on ‘Our vision for an urban landscape for people and nature’ with a fantastic panel Ian Houlston Elaine Cresswell and Simon Needle. Following the launch this month of the LI’s Landscape and Carbon Report we will be discussing the need to start synthesising carbon management alongside other ecosystem goods and services in an integrated and holistic way, informed by evidence when masterplanning and designing . From creating functioning connected habitat networks, regenerating soils and controlling flooding, to contributing to the character of a place and creating hospitable environments in extreme temperatures, trees and woodlands have a critical role. Design interventions that adopt nature-based solutions, for example replacing grey infrastructure with and sustainable drainage can reduce the embodied carbon of a masterplan by over 20% whilst contributing positively to nature recovery while creating places that work for both people and nature. https://lnkd.in/e_qwVfJc Sue James Emma Ferranti Wei Yang Carolin Göhler Pete Swift Ludovic P. How do you give nature a voice and place it at the centre of government decision-making? This is a question that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and their arm’s length bodies sought to answer. Methods was privileged to support this journey of discovery, exploring new ways to value 'Natural Capital.' We partnered and collaborated with Defra, Natural England, JNCC, Cefas, Environment Agency, and the Marine Management Organisation on this Marine Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment (mNCEA) Programme. This case study offers a glimpse into this remarkable endeavour to prioritise nature in all future decision-making. It highlights an extraordinary project dedicated to valuing and safeguarding our natural world.
