Today marks the 248th birthday of the U.S. Navy. The birth of this fleet initiated quite a debate in the Continental Congress. Samuel Chase, one of the Founding Fathers, firmly believed that maintaining a standing navy was “the maddest idea in the world.” The original Continental Navy was founded, dissolved, and has since evolved into today’s modern Navy, which stands at an impressive level of readiness. There are currently 335,187 active duty service members, 272,505 enlisted personnel, and 191,597 Navy civilians. The US Navy has protected the country throughout its many wars.
