Happy Friday Everyone! Been meeting all sorts of awesome people this past week. Talked with things from working on a board game to creating a pitch for a game. Thought it would be cool to share some of these things on here for those curious. Board / Tabletop Games: One thing that comes up frequently is board games and how their development differs from video games. There are many similarities when it comes to developing rules and how playtesting is important to get to that best state of the game. But, the potential costs vary as board games require some kind of manufacturer to make the game become physically real. The way rules are conveyed are also very different that is why having some game mechanics that are familiar to players helps them need to focus on only learning what is unique about your game. Pitching: Pitches are scary and it is okay to be nervous. But, it is important to be prepared and come in with numbers. Funny part is that shows like Shark Tank focus on the numbers because they are the most important part when pitching to a publisher or investor. The other thing is preparation. Especially if doing a pitch as a group. To get your timings down you really have to take time with your group and prep to make the transitions come off as natural. You should also know your slides just incase something strange happens and things go wrong (with technology...that never happens...maybe). Also, know your audience and what they are interested in to help build out your pitch deck. Working on Mobile Titles: An interesting topic of dealing with mobile is how to deal with variable screens. Especially with UI where things get wonky fast. In the past few months working on mobile titles I have gotten very used to adapting for screens of all kinds. One of the most beneficial things you can do is start thinking of your UI in terms of blocks. An example is if you have a portrait style game and you always want your buttons to take up 1/4 the screen each you could leverage a layout group and use a spacer to take up the half in the middle. UI in mobile actually becomes more like Tetris than anything else. With console you can get spoiled because there are only so many resolutions but mobile...oh mobile it is full of variety. As this is something that can trip up many devs I am always willing to talk more about it. With that knowledge dump of the week out there...have a great weekend everyone! If you find any interesting books, assets, or games share below! If you have any of your own tips and tricks you want to set free into the world throw that below as well. Let's make this a big ol' repository for info.
