I am thrilled to share that I have successfully completed my Master's thesis as part of the MIT System Design and Management Program. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to my thesis advisor, Bruce Cameron, for his invaluable guidance and support. I am also immensely grateful to the entire SDM program staff for their continuous support throughout this journey. Special thanks to my family and friends for their unwavering encouragement. In this research, I explored the scalability challenges of network architecture within the Metaverse, focusing on virtual reality (VR) applications given higher throughput implications and relative technology maturity. The study introduces a data volume-based framework to evaluate whether current network infrastructure can support various Metaverse use cases. Key findings show that use cases in education, entertainment, facility design, product design, and training could be most constrained by current network infrastructure capabilities; additionally, the network is underutilized as it only sends necessary status updates for syncing purposes with the server. Future areas of research to improve the throughput model were also identified. Check out my thesis and explore the detailed findings and methodologies.
