Maersk Supply Service has launched Maersk Offshore Wind, a new company that will provide installation services to the offshore wind market based on a new offshore wind installation vessel (Maersk WIV) concept. The design and concept are estimated to reduce the installation time of offshore wind turbines substantially compared to conventional methods, thereby lowering the overall installation cost for the developers, Maersk Supply Service said. The first vessel will be delivered in 2025. The global offshore wind market continues to see substantial growth supported by ambitious targets in the EU and US of a total installed capacity of at least 90 GW offshore wind by 2030, and over 400 GW by 2050. Offshore wind deployment needs to speed up to meet these demands, and Maersk Offshore Wind said the company can reduce installation time by about 30 per cent, which means faster energy delivery and lower installation costs, leading to better total installation economics. ”We need new solutions to meet the ambitious goals for offshore wind capacity in Europe and the US. Maersk Offshore Wind’s concept can reduce the installation time of offshore wind turbines by almost one-third, delivering energy to the grid faster and lowering total installation costs increasing the competitiveness of our customers when they bid for new projects. We are establishing Maersk Offshore Wind as an independent entity to leverage our decades of offshore expertise and accelerate the development of the offshore wind industry,” Martin Larsen, CFO of A.P. Moller Holding and Chair of Maersk Offshore Wind, said. Michael Reimer Mortensen has been appointed CEO of Maersk Offshore Wind. Was a pleasure to represent Equinor again and share a little more about who we are and what we seek to achieve, at the recent Informa Offshore Wind Conference - back in my home city of Melbourne! The past 12 months for the offshore wind industry (both globally and locally) has seen many challenges with supply chain constraints, inflationary pressures, social licence, and complex routes to market. Also, how dynamic it has been with bid competition, partnerships and mergers, withdrawals and swaps. But all-in-all, just how far it’s come in a positive sense. Looking forward, it is clear that Australia is ripe for the picking with offshore wind as a complement to other renewables and storage technologies. Australia has the greatest number of players vying for seabed acreage than anywhere in Asia Pacific - a chance to grow a mega future industry that can deliver a bright energy and economic future for generations. Although there is still a long way to go and a lot to get done (well), building on the offshore experience of companies like Equinor and working with governments, industry, business and the community - we can achieve these shared goals, together. Hyundai Heavy Sets Sights on Scottish Floating Offshore Wind Scottish Enterprise (SE) and Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE) signed the MoU with Hyundai Heavy in Edinburgh, described as a “vote of confidence” in Scotland, committing each other to pursue opportunities for floating offshore wind projects in Scotland. This is the South Korean company’s first agreement in Europe on floating offshore wind manufacturing. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is the world’s largest shipbuilding company and a major manufacturer of equipment such as the floating substructures that form a critical part of the multi-billion offshore wind supply chain. ”We are currently exploring ways to collaborate with various partners to develop the offshore wind market, including establishing a manufacturing supply infrastructure,” Senior Vice President of Corporate Planning Division and Wind Energy Business, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hannae Choi, said. ”We plan to expand the market by leveraging our world-class know-how in designing and manufacturing floating structures.” The latest in a series of key developments in the sector, the MoU follows the Scotland First Minister’s announcement of strategic investment of up to GBP 500 million over the next five years to unlock private investment in ports, manufacturing, and assembly work to anchor the offshore wind supply chain in Scotland. It also builds on recent announcements of international investment into the renewable energy supply chain, including the planned GBP 350 million Sumitomo cable factory in the Port of Nigg, based in the Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport area. Up to GBP 24.5 million of funding has been committed to this project by the Scottish Government, SE and HIE. ”This partnership agreement is a vote of confidence in Scotland and our offshore wind industry – demonstrating our ability to develop the international relationships upon which investment that will help us reach our climate targets is founded,” Deputy First Minister Shona Robison, who witnessed the MoU signing, said. ”Scotland’s offshore wind sector is key to our transition to net zero and this partnership is the next step forward in realising the economic opportunities from our floating offshore wind potential. Scottish Enterprise and Highlands & Islands Enterprise are playing a vital role in supporting a fair and just transition for the energy sector. Collaborations between our economic development agencies and global leaders with world-class expertise, such as HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, are key to delivering that ambition.
