Experienced Solutions Architect & Business Strategist | Enhancing Operations & Customer Experience in Tech and Non-Profits | Empowering Communities Since 2001
Ha! Thanks for sharing. It is all mindset, isn't it. If possible, one needs to think at different scales. To some this comes easy. To others, they are forever in the weeds or the clouds. This got me thinking about from the customer side. All too often, from certain styles of SaaS start-ups, there is a pattern to releasing the thing: - Customers reading announcement of the thing: They built the thing. - Customers using the thing: They built an MVP of the thing. - Customers waiting for updates to the thing: They built another thing. - Customers using the new thing: They built an MVP of the new thing.

Junior engineer: "How can I do this thing?" Mid-level engineer: "What thing do you want me to do next?" Senior engineer: "Why are we doing this thing?" To get to the next level, start thinking like the next level.

So, we just put up our first two job postings ever: 1. Senior Software Engineer: https://lnkd.in/g-HwQ_Sa 2. Head of Engineering: “We’re going to pass because he lists his title as a Staff software engineer. There is a chance that he is senior, but no way he is staff.” Me: “thanks for letting me know. The Staff Engineer title/definition seems to differ at each company and it's not something he's tied to - he's more focused on the kind of work and the people he'd be working with.” No response for a few days... Me: “would it make sense to get something scheduled with him? His official title is "staff engineer", which means something completely different at his current company, but he's not tied to that at all. Head of Engineering: “I will unarchive so we can have a chat. Thanks George.” 1 week later… Head of Engineering: “We have extended him an offer!” Candidate accepts the offer 1 year later, he gets promoted to Staff Engineer Head of Engineering: “He’s one of the best engineers we’ve ever hired! Thanks so much for finding him” Have more conversations Resumes don’t tell the whole story
