Today is World Autism Awareness Day; a time to celebrate the unique talents and perspectives of individuals on the autism spectrum.🧩 Every day, Direct Access works to promote acceptance, awareness, and understanding of the lives and internal worlds of autistic people, with the aim to create a more inclusive world for everyone. Here are ten Do's and Don'ts we recommend following when communicating with someone with autism, as written by an autistic member of our team. 5 things to Do: 1. Recognise that making eye contact can be difficult for autistic people. 2. Be punctual when making plans to meet up. 3. Give clear and unambiguous explanations with realistic timescales. 4. Be aware that expressive language may not always match age. 5. Provide warning before entering new spaces that are loud or crowded. 5 things to Avoid: 6. Make assumptions about the person, if you are curious about what affects them then ask. 7. Make an autistic person endure prolonged waiting times unless there is no alternative. 8. Spring surprises; adaptation to change is difficult so time to process variation should be accounted for. 9. Assume that because verbalisation can be a challenge that autistic person doesn't understand. 10. Initiate physical contact without warning or explaining what you plan to do. #WorldAutismAwarenessDay #Autism #AccessConsultants #DisabilityConsultants

Today is World Autism Understanding Day. 💛 About 675,000 Australians are Autistic and each person has different strengths, interests, challenges and aspirations. 💛 Our friends at Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) have shared some great tips about what you might say if you find out someone is Autistic: “What things are you passionate about?” “Is there something I can do to make you feel more comfortable?” “What can I do to support you?” ”You do you.” “How would you like to communicate?” Check out the article below for more helpful insights. ⤵ #WAUD2024 #UnderstandingAutism #AutismAwareness #Autism #AuADHD #Neurodiversity

On World Autism Understanding Day (2 April), we celebrate the diversity of experiences and perspectives within the autism community. For Victoria University Accessibility Officer Mikki Darcy Moore, neurodiversity should be celebrated. Mikki encourages us not to shy away from conversations about autism as many Autistic individuals enjoy sharing their insights and how they perceive the world differently. 👉 Understanding starts with you... https://lnkd.in/gD4J-DBg #WAUD2024 #autism #autismUnderstanding

Autistic spectrum disorder is a group of developmental disabilities in which children may behave, communicate, interact and learn in ways that are different from most other children. To spread awareness around the condition and to enhance efforts in educating, empowering and supporting people with this condition, World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated every year on April 2. The theme of World Autism Awareness Day this year is 'Empowering Autistic Voices' which aims at providing more support and power to the individuals with this condition, in order to ensure they lead a meaningful life and even pursue successful careers. The theme is decided annually to revive the resolve to support and accept people with this condition. #ASD #autism #speechtherapy #speechtherapyactivities
