There are two alternative perspectives on what this chart means: either uranium and nuclear power plants are a terrific investment, or AI will have a great deal less impact on the future of ordinary people than is currently believed. Do you have any idea how much it costs to build a nuclear power plant? No...? Well, nobody else does either. The costs are astronomical and uncapped and they rise every time a design is discussed. And that's another thing...there is no current "design" and the design models under discussion are not considered the "final" approach as the preferred, safer approach (including a sarcophagus in the event of a compromise or meltdown) has never been finalized. The silver lining is that the concerns of how AI would cause the robots to take control of us or kill us off are likely wildly overstated. The robots can't afford it, either. 😎

Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory have successfully demonstrated a remotely-operated telerobotics system to improve hazardous waste cleanup at nuclear sites. The human-like robots have dexterous, multi-fingered arms that can closely mimic the movements of a human, and were able to open, inspect, and sort mock nuclear waste containers in experiments conducted at the laboratory. The technology is still in the prototype stage but, according to Argonne, the long-term goal is to use these robots and digital technologies to clean up dormant nuclear facilities, with the potential for broader hazardous materials handling applications. #NEI #nuclearpower #nuclearenergy #robotics #wastemanagement #digitaltwin Keep up-to-date with all the news from the global nuclear power industry by subscribing to our newsletter: https://lnkd.in/dudebMf

How cool is this? AtkinsRéalis' SPOT the Robot Dog from Boston Dynamics was for the first time used to livestream nuclear site inspection footage directly from the survey location into a Sellafield project team meeting. Due to the condition of parts of the building, it was unsafe to allow a human inspection to be performed. This was the perfect opportunity for the Virtual Site Access team to deploy SPOT and take advantage of its unique capabilities. The building that was being inspected was the Calder Hall Reactor Administration Building. It housed the iconic reactor control room where some of the pioneers of UK nuclear power ran the world's first full-scale commercial nuclear power station, feeding low-carbon electricity into the UK's power network for over 40 years. In addition to surveying an active area, we are using SPOT to remove waste and clean active cells. This would normally require workers to be in air-fed protective suits. It normally takes several hours to suit up and safely exit, leaving only a limited time to work in the active cell area. Using SPOT increases efficiency, reduces cost, and saves on additional waste being generated by used protective gear. We are always looking to develop new methods to help our clients deliver on their decommissioning goals. And this is a great example of how digital and robotics forms a cornerstone of that innovation. #SPOTtheDog #robotics #digital
