The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation invites applications to its Long Island Sound Futures Fund (LISFF) which aims to restore the health and living resources of Long Island Sound. In 2024, the fund will award approximately $12 million within the Long Island Sound watershed boundary in support of efforts to test innovative approaches to conservation, deliver transformative projects, and assist people and communities that value the Sound and take a role in its future. The fund will invest in projects under three CCMP themes, in CCMP Implementation Actions (IAs) associated with each theme, and in three CCMP cross-cutting principles: resiliency to climate change, long-term sustainability, and environmental justice all defined in the CCMP. The most competitive proposals will be those that incorporate theme(s), IA(s) and one or more cross- cutting principle(s) of the CCMP. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and its partners recently announced $141.3 million in grants through the America the Beautiful Challenge. The 74 new grants announce will support landscape-scale conservation projects across 46 States, three U.S. Territories, and 21 Tribal and Native Nations. The grants will generate at least $12 million in matching contributions for a total conservation impact of more than $153 million. The America the Beautiful Challenge is a partnership between the U.S. Department of the Interior, the USDA, the United States Department of Defense, Native Americans in Philanthropy and NFWF. The competitive grant awards were made possible with funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Inflation Reduction Act, other federal conservation programs and private sources. "The 2023 America the Beautiful Challenge projects will enhance capability across multiple Department of Defense installations and ensure the longevity and sustainability of natural lands that support our missions,” said Brendan Owens, Assistant Secretary of Defense, Energy, Installations and Environment. “The seven #DOD projects are receiving over $5.2 million in DOD Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration Program funding, coupled with nearly $2.2 million in funding from the Department of the Interior's U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and nearly $787,000 in non-federal partner contributions." #readiness #environment #onecommunity

As we close out the year, there is more good news for forests and the Appalachians - one of the most resilient, diverse and productive places on Earth - This ancient chain of forested mountains, valleys, wetlands and rivers spans roughly 2,000 miles from Alabama to Canada and at The Nature Conservancy, we are working to: ➕ Stitch together a connected landscape of climate resilient lands, corridors and waters at the pace and scale necessary to mitigate climate change and protect biodiversity. ➕ Leverage land and water conservation to provide critical natural climate solutions for healthy communities and resilient landscapes. ➕ Aid the capacity of local conservation organizations, Indigenous Peoples and local communities to help conserve high priority lands and waters; ensure conservation outcomes equitably benefit all who live in and rely on the Appalachians. With this deal, we just got one step closer - David Phemister, Hayley Lynch, Bill Estep FISH & WILDLIFE RESOURCES, KENTUCKY DEPARTMENT OF Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation https://lnkd.in/eq4jRHzi

Learn how Pacific Forest Trust helped propose and shape historic legislation in 2023 whose impact will help combat the #climatecrisis & its daily effects. https://lnkd.in/gvDraGFP & triple your impact with a gift to PFT by midnight Sunday 12.31 https://lnkd.in/gS4-xHMX Examples include: - PFT president, Laurie Wayburn, chaired the 1757 Expert Advisory Committee, as laid out by AB1757, which delivered its recommendations to implement targets for the conservation, management, and restoration of California’s natural and working lands sector. A first-in-the-nation effort, these recommendations would contribute to 250–400 million metric tons of carbon dioxide reductions in the next 5–10 years. - PFT continued our work with the Wildfire Resiliency Working Group — comprised of cultural fire practitioners, health advocates, scientists, farmers, environmental justice leaders, #forest landowners and more. This year, they developed a proposal for Governor Newsom and legislators in the Golden State that $1 billion be allotted to get more beneficial fire on the ground, in addition to other management methods to increase forest resilience and community safety from catastrophic #wildfires. - PFT has long advocated for infrastructure that would allow for the safe passage of wildlife over major highways, primarily Interstate 5, as this road bisects the states of #California and #Oregon across vital wildlife corridors. These past several years, the Southern Oregon Wildlife Crossing Coalition (SOWCC) has led the effort and the group put forth a proposal for a planning grant to create a wildlife crossing over I5 to help protect Oregon’s uniquely biodiverse Siskiyou Crest, a vital east-west corridor for many species.

In honor of Earth Day, River Partners is thrilled to announce a new partnership with Apple to help bring life back to Sacramento River ecosystems while also conserving and replenishing vital freshwater resources. Apple is supporting a 10-year effort to rewild 750 acres of farmland located along the confluence of the Sacramento River, Feather River, and Butte Creek north of the city of Sacramento. The confluence of these waterways is the largest anywhere in California’s Central Valley. Restoration of this unique property will involve planting hundreds of thousands of native trees and vegetation and reconnecting the vast historic floodplain. Apple’s investment is expected to leverage nearly 5 billion gallons of freshwater benefits over 20 years by significantly reducing water demand on the property and reconnecting the Sacramento and Feather rivers to the historic floodplain to recharge underground aquifers during wet years. The effort will also support a thriving river ecosystem and all four runs of imperiled Chinook salmon that migrate up and down the Sacramento River. Populations of winter-run Chinook salmon in particular have dropped by 90% over the last 40 years due in large part to the loss of natural floodplains. The partnership represents a new era of water sustainability—one that maximizes investments in innovative water stewardship and results in tangible, lasting ecosystem, community, and climate benefits. Dos Rios Norte is also funded by the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife, California Natural Resources Agency , Wildlife Conservation Board, and Bureau of Reclamation. Preserving land can be a family affair. Over the last 35 years, ACT has worked with landowners to protect their family-owned lands, which oftentimes have been passed down for generations. When that land is threatened by development pressure, ACT has assisted families in restricting the development rights on their land through a conservation easement. Over 4,446 acres and counting have been protected this way in ACT's history. Conservation easements allow the land to remain in private ownership, while protecting landscapes that have unique features. When Penny and Russ Weber were looking for a way to protect their 518-acre property in Columbia County forever, ACT worked with them to place a conservation easement on the land. Through this process, over 243 native species were documented, giving the property a special designation as the first easement recorded in Florida on a Grassland of Special Environmental Significance: https://lnkd.in/eZrAjaE Giving landowners peace of mind in knowing that the special places they love will remain for future generations to enjoy is one benefit of a conservation easement. Check out this video featuring the Webers to learn more about easements and why more landowners are looking to land trusts like ACT to help them navigate the process of protecting their land and legacy. Video by Houston Wells. Funding support generously provided by the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida through the Protect Florida Springs Tag Grant program. #KeepFLWild #35Years #conservation #savingland #easements #legacy
