Expert Ambulatory Surgery Clinical Director with over 20 years of experience in surgery. Highly skilled Nurse Educator with over 13 years in undergraduate and graduate education.
How do we define Nivice nurses to “practice ready”? The old model did not allow the Novice nurse to start in the ICU or cardiac step-down. You had to be a Novice nurse and gain critical experience to move towards becoming an expert some day. So, if you want me to graduate a Novice nurse with no experience, to be ready for the ICU-I personally do not think that is realistic. It takes time and exposure to develop intuition—and that is dependent on age and life experience and critical thinking skills as the foundation of clinical reasoning skills.
Hello all. A recent post has me very curious. Within the last year or so, I am hearing the term "practice ready" used quite often....as in, "We need to be sure our students are 'practice ready'". Remember back to the 2008 Nursing Advisory Board research that noted something like over 90% of deans believe their new graduates are ready for practice, but less than 10% of practice nursing leaders believed they were. I would think there is quite a difference between these two sectors about what "practice ready" means. My questions are these: What does the term "practice ready" mean to all of you? How do you use and define that term? Thank you all so much!
