**Attention Animal Care and Control Professionals ** Animal abuse often occurs before or alongside the abuse of people, which is commonly known as the Violence Link. In a social system that is overtaxed and underfunded, animal welfare is marginalized or completely ignored, despite evidence that shows there is greater benefit in acting holistically, thereby providing better support for victims and survivors, and reducing the vulnerability of animals and people. The Canadian Violence Link Conference is an innovative event that examines the link between interpersonal abuse and animal abuse and looks at the vulnerabilities and intersections in both. This biennial conference brings together stakeholders in the areas of law, enforcement, behavior, interpersonal violence, social services, and animal welfare that work to prevent and address violence against people or animals for cross-sectoral training on how to collaborate and stop the cycle of violence. There is a link between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence or violent crimes against humans. Abuse of an animal is one of the four most significant risk factors associated with someone engaging in intimate partner/domestic violence. Companion animal abuse occurred in 60% of homes with pets that were already under observation due to child abuse. Elder self-neglect often coincides with animal neglect. While these statistics are often shocking and sad, it's important to recognize that intervening and helping with animal cruelty helps not only the animals but the people in your community too. This is an article in this month’s edition of the National Link Coalition's letter. The quote by Kathleen Wood of the Animal Legal Defense Fund underscores the significance of recognising the link between animal abuse and domestic abuse. Recognising this link has significant implications for policy development and intervention strategies aimed at addressing these intertwined issues. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need to integrate animal welfare considerations into the broader framework of domestic abuse prevention and response. This holistic approach acknowledges the impact of animal abuse on the well-being of both human and animal victims, needs coordinated efforts to provide comprehensive support and protection. By enhancing the capacity of judges to consider the implications of animal cruelty in cases of domestic abuse, this educational initiative contributes to a more comprehensive and informed approach to adjudicating such complex matters. Additionally, integrating this awareness into judicial decision-making processes can lead to more effective interventions and protective measures for both human and animal victims. #AnimalWelfare #AnimalAbuse #DomesticAbuse

Our colleagues at the Animal League Defense Fund created National Justice for Animals Week to raise public awareness around crimes committed against animals. Here are some actions you can take to raise awareness about animal cruelty: ✔️ Have a plan: identify which agencies in your community are responsible for responding to criminal animal cruelty. We recommend that you contact your local humane society or SPCA and speak to the Animal Cruelty Investigations department. If there is no local SPCA or humane society where you live, call the provincial SPCA, the local police or the RCMP to report the abuse. ✔️ Take action by signing petitions and sharing national and local animal issues with your close network. ✔️ Don’t just read the news—make it! Write a letter to the editor about an issue involving animals in your area. In an upcoming paper, of which I am lead author, we posit that a partnership with scientists, ethicists, community members, lawyers and policy makers should be formed to make a concentrated effort to recognize sentience in non-human animals in future updates of the US Animal Welfare Act and the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.  Your thoughts?

The previous article focused on caring for lambs or goat kids as they are growing. This article focuses on animal health and the most common small stock diseases. In a nutshell, animal health relates to the absence of disease or the normal functioning of an organism and normal behavior of an animal. Animal health is a subset of animal welfare. Animal health also relates, inter alia, to the interplay between animal welfare and environmental protection. Animal health is thus a key component of animal welfare. https://lnkd.in/dW-jtJ7G
