In all seriousness, seeing this viral phenomenon leap from gaming YouTube to recruiter LinkedIn is like seeing Mickey Mouse in an episode of Scooby-Do. Absolutley fascinating. Just shows how a quality product can transcend spaces and platforms organically. If there are people studying viral digital phenomena out there...this is definitely one to look into. *if you are confused Helldivers 2 is a viral multiplayer co-op game that has taken the internet by storm. Universally praised for quality and low price point, it is a breath of fresh air in an industry that seems to have forgot how to make fun games. With an almost absent marketing budget it has far surpass expectations with over 400k concurrent players and has spread like wildfire through word of mouth. Now...on LinkedIn apparently.

Let's face it - being a recruiter can feel a lot like playing Helldivers: challenging, but oh-so-rewarding... and sometimes, downright hilarious! 🎯 Target Practice: Like aiming for bugs in Helldivers, we're always aiming for the best candidates. Sometimes we hit the mark dead-on, other times... well, let's just say we've had a few friendly fire incidents! 💼 Juggling Act: Balancing multiple roles and candidates is like trying to keep all those Helldivers alive in the chaos of battle. One wrong move and it's game over... or at least a frantic scramble to patch things up! 📞 Phone Tag: Playing tag with candidates is our version of the Helldivers' frantic comms chatter. Just when you think you've got someone on the line, they disappear faster than an Illuminate Scout! 💥 Friendly Fire: Accidentally sending the wrong email or scheduling a meeting on the wrong day? It's like tossing a grenade into your own squad in Helldivers. Whoops... sorry, team! (Me and Daniel Atkins know this all too well, cough cough Owen Cook 😂). 🤔 Strategic Retreats: Sometimes, you've got to know when to retreat and regroup. Just like in Helldivers, a strategic withdrawal can save the day... and maybe even earn you a few laughs along the way! FOMO in Recruiting Something I continue to observe in recruiting is the FOMO that hiring teams experience when looking for the next hire. This shows up in many ways that can have detrimental effects on your hiring process. 1. Keeping the role up for longer than it needs to be. With effective sourcing in combination with a posting strategy that hits the places where your talent participates; gives you the maximum opportunity to identify that talent. - Effect: Continuing to attract more candidates that your team can possibly review; eroding candidate experience AND making candidates work extra hard that you had no intention of hiring. 2. Restarting the search. You interviewed, 3,4,5,6,7...or more candidates and none "fits the bill exactly". - Effect: Those candidates who interviewed are typically being 'strung' along while you continue to look for that next best candidate. They invested time in you, your process and your company. Lastly, the effect is that this role continues to stay open (TTF), unfilled and work being undertaken by you and your teams. This is an interaction that happens to me a few times a month: Senior Contact: "James seen you're recruiting for X am I be good for it? :)" Me: "Hey, great to hear from you, for reason's X and Y I don't think so" Senior Contact: "Ok, no worries, thanks for getting back. Appreciate it." Me: "No problem. Also, seen you're teams hiring, what's the sitch there?" Senior Contact: 👻 👻 👻 👻 It's a two way street folks. You're never going to maximize your networked relationships unless you are willing to help them as much as they are you. I'm not inferring Quid Pro Quo either, people are just more likely to go the extra mile for the person who went the extra mile for them. If one person firmly places themselves in the others community, adds value to them, then who do you think is the first call the other party makes when something interesting comes up?
