How can scientists ensure, measure and effectively communicate societal #impact? As part of the Open Innovation in Science (OIS) Research Conference in 2023, we addressed this question and, in particular, tried to find out whether #openness and #collaboration in scientific research can create synergies between the demands for scientific and social impact.   Two focus-theme sessions, the OIS Experiment and the OIS Debate, explored the special conference topic of “Synergies and Tensions around impact: How does Open Innovation in Science come into play?". Conference participants engaged in heated discussions on how and why open and collaborative practices in scientific research can help with both, improving scientific productivity and societal impact. “The Netherlands is doing extremely well in the scientific field: leading the Top 20 most productive countries.” 🇳🇱 This conclusion drew Elsevier in their report on the current state of Dutch science.    The key success factor is international collaboration 🌏 🤝 . A large proportion of Dutch publications are the result of international collaborations, which have a significantly higher scientific impact. Research that results from academic-corporate collaborations has even more impact on science. 📣 Today, a new research project was kicked off at CWTS: Understanding Misinformation and Science in Societal Debates (UnMiSSeD). The project will focus on the interaction between misinformation and science on social media during COVID-19. The day started with input talks on the topic of social media and misinformation. It was great to see such a wonderful group of researchers together with backgrounds in both quantitative and qualitative methods! 🤩 The UnMiSSeD project is funded by the European Media & Information Fund (EMIF) and is a collaboration between researchers from CWTS, the Fondazione Bruno Kessler - FBK, and the University of Geneva. Citizen science, that can be defined as ‘the active engagement of non-professional scientists in scientific knowledge production’, can have great scientific and societal benefits. But it is also fraught with challenges as the existing research system is not truly adapted to this approach and many research institutions and policymakers are still hesitant to promote its use.  The OECD Global Science Forum (https://lnkd.in/eusEBBZp) workshop that just took place over the last two days precisely aimed at addressing those challenges, looking from both the practitioners’ and the science policymakers’ perspectives. The very rich discussions will be used to develop a policy framework, including experiences, challenges and good practices from a diversity of international stakeholders, which will help science policymakers integrate considerations of citizen science across science policy and promote broader understanding and policy consensus on the roles of citizen science.

The U.S. federal government is the largest funder of scientific research in the world — but it is risk-averse to a fault. New approaches to peer review can bring American research back to the bleeding edge. Fascinating article by Federation of American Scientists. In 2021, the researchers Chiara Franzoni and Paula Stephan published a working paper arguing that risk in science results from three sources of uncertainty: uncertainty of research outcomes, uncertainty of the probability of success, and uncertainty of the value of the research outcomes.
