I love reading the HBR! As I work with Kelly Judge Goldberg, M.Ed. and Neffér-Oduntunde A. Kerr (Boom) on the IWC Women's Mentoring Kick-off Slide deck, I stumbled on this article and wanted to share... We, women, are bad assess, excelling in leadership skills scoring higher than men. and yet, we hold very few leadership positions. Let's uplift, instead of tearing down. Let's learn from each other and support OUR growth in every industry.

Psychological research shows women leaders improve businesses. Experts share how to increase the number of women in leadership roles When more women are empowered to lead, everyone benefits. Decades of studies show women leaders help increase productivity, enhance collaboration, inspire organizational dedication, and improve fairness. Despite these benefits, only 10% of Fortune 500 companies are led by women. How can businesses create more opportunities for women in leadership spaces using psychological science? Industrial/organizational (I/O) psychologists offer a host of evidence-backed strategies for helping close the gender gap. These include earlier identification of leadership potential, training for men and others already in power to serve as allies, and formal mentoring and sponsorship programs. “Even in 2023, women still face challenges to their authority and success that are greater than those faced by their male counterparts,” said Alice Eagly, PhD, a professor of psychology emerita at Northwestern University and pioneer in researching women’s leadership. “However, despite these difficulties, women are slowly rising in political leadership and in corporate and educational leadership.” #gender #women #leadership #success #psychology #management #skills #teams #emotionalintelligence https://lnkd.in/dKZhy4xg

When women lead, the effects are transformative for everyone. Research shows they epitomize organizational values, improve team collaboration, and challenge stereotypes. It’s time to embrace the power of female leadership. #WomenLeadership

Women leaders are more likely to inspire others to follow a company's mission statement. A group's ability to collaborate and problem solve is higher when women are in that group. When a company has female leaders, organizational trust increases significantly (in both male and female dominated industries). Yet... Men are put into leadership roles more often. Woman experience bias based on gender, race, and disability more than men, resulting in lower psychological safety at work (this impacts a host of things like productivity or wanting to be promoted). Women's appearance is commented on more and they are told to "smile more" or that they "look mad." For #internationalwomensday and beyond, we must focus on ways to advance women into leadership roles. We need to give women experiences that will help them develop further (professionally and personally), get a mentorship program going for women at our work places, encourage women to join women-led masterminds and professional organizations, and promote allyship with female colleagues. I came across this interesting talk on the science of women leadership. I have done many sessions on the theme and explored this area in depth-but we still don't have many answers. Here are three interesting things that I learnt from this which will be relevant for all of us in this field. 1. A research shows that women score higher in demonstration of leadership skills and traits but they score themselves low on a parameter called leader efficacy- Women do NOT believe that they can succeed as a leader even though they do demonstrate leadership skills. This is for a group of girls in college- even before they enter the working world. How do we get women ( and I include me in this group) to BELIEVE that they can be great leaders? 2. Women are AFRAID to lead. Women reported feelings of fear when they had options for choosing leadership roles. I have spoken about this while describing the DETER and DIMINISH strategies used to keep people from their power. There is a fear of an identity threat. There is research ( from Amnesty International) that shows that women in politics get trolled 7 times more than men. How do we get over this FEAR of leadership? 3. Women face this fear the mental models and stereotypes for women leaders are not positive. There is a STEREOTYPE THREAT- the risk of conforming to the stereotypes about the particular group. How do we create POSITIVE role models for women leaders so that they do not fear being labelled and stereotypes? I believe that this is where leadership programs and coaching for women will make a difference apart from all the other things that need to be done at an external level. A safe space to discuss and explore identity, fear and stereotypes is necessary to get more women into leadership roles. Organizations and communities that provide that can help to correct the leadership imbalance. Aparna Mathur Ruchika B.
