ITV to host Starmer-Sunak election debate "ITV has announced that the first head-to-head General Election debate between Rishi Sunak, leader of the Conservative Party, and Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, will take place on ITV1, ITVX and STV and STV Player on June 4th at 9pm." As European Broadcasting Union (EBU) can attest from last week with the #eurovisiondebate debates, they can be very enlightening, and actually draw in a lot of interest from the public. While politics can seem a dry subject to the general public, when elections come about, I believe the facts bare out that the public IS interested in who will govern them. People who aren't usually tuned in to politics suddenly become more attuned when elections have been called/scheduled. "The hour-long debate, Sunak v Starmer: The ITV Debate, will be moderated by Julie Etchingham. It will take place live in front of a studio audience and will be made and produced by MultiStory Media, part of ITV Studios. Etchingham moderated General Election debates in 2015, 2017 and 2019." It's another moment of Live TV and the irreplaceable nature of #livecontent Yes, people want convenience when it comes to entertainment and want SVOD, but when it's current, when it's a chance to see what will make the news, when it's a chance to see news made in real time, people come to #livetv "ITV plans to broadcast additional programming including an interview programme with other party leaders and a multi-party debate. Details on the further programmes will be announced shortly." Of the format, I think it's not a good idea to separate the two debates. While in the UK, the electoral system means that it's most likely the Conservatives or Labour will form the next government, it may yet end in a hung parliament, and then the Liberal Democrats, the Greens or the SNP could be key if Labour are the largest party and the same thing for the Conservatives if they are the largest party and Reform could be key. It would be better to allow everyone on the stage to debate, because the second debate of the other candidates will clearly be less appealing and not get as many eyeballs and ratings. I'm sure this is out of ITV's hands, its the political parties setting their terms. #television #elections #ukelections #itvdebates #politics #politicaldebates

Ahead of the first televised head-to-head UK General Election debate tonight between Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer, bringing back a piece I wrote for The Times Red Box on how to prepare for high-stakes election TV debates. Drawing from experiences preparing senior Cabinet Ministers during the UK 2017 General Election and the EU Referendum campaign, the fundamentals for all participants remain constant: 🔹 A particularly time and resource intense format, debates require participants – and their support teams – to expect the unexpected. 🔹Taking the time to role-play, anticipate your opponents' weak spots, and come up with zingers is crucial. 🔹Real-world examples and empathy are needed to connect emotionally with viewers. 🔹All sides need their players to look and sound like they come from “Planet Normal”. Not just paying lip-service, the principals need to show empathy, that they get people’s everyday concerns, understand their lives and what makes them tick. 🔹 There should also be zingers a-plenty. The sharp ripostes designed to get noticed, ignite the next day’s press and have a lifespan throughout the campaign and beyond. 🔹Think about the viewer at home experience, not just the people in the room. Body language, looking and sounding like you are doing the top job, and befriending the main camera are vital. 🔹This format means lots of demands to “level with people” and “rule things in or out”. Falling into the trap of the off-the-cuff thinking can be an advisor’s worst nightmare, but for the viewer and voter, how someone reacts in the moment can be illuminating. 👇 Edelman Global Advisory #GeneralElection

[Broadcasters' exit polls predict landslide but overestimate margin] Opting for ratings, broadcasters introduce slew of entertaining footage While South Korean broadcasters correctly predicted a sweeping victory for the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea in Wednesday's general election, the actual margin of victory was not as great as their forecasts suggested. When the counting had concluded on Thursday, the main opposition Democratic Party claimed 161 out of the 254 seats in electoral districts, while the ruling People Power Party claimed 90. Including proportional seats, the main opposition and its satellite party won 175 seats, while the ruling party and its satellite party clinched 108 seats in the 300-member National Assembly. Exit polls jointly conducted by terrestrial broadcasters KBS (Korean Broadcasting System), MBC and SBS predicted the Democratic Party and its satellite party to secure between 178 and 197 seats, while the ruling bloc was projected to secure 85 to 105 seats. The discrepancy has largely been attributed to the record turnout of 31.28 percent of the electorate during the two-day early voting period last week. According to the Public Official Election Act, exit poll surveys cannot be conducted on early voting days. Make sure you invest your campaigns $$$'s in the most "trusted" source (of all mediums tested*) when it comes to learning about candidates for public office. LOCAL NEWSPAPERS! On a 10-point scale (with 10 being the “highest”), local newspapers are rated a 7.38, higher than TV stations (6.45), radio (5.58), political mailings (4.63) or social media platforms (2.65). *2022 NNA.

📺 What’s the point of #TVdebates? 📺 Anyone who watched last night’s #ITVdebate probably learned very little they didn’t already know about the two main parties and their leaders. On paper, they are an opportunity for political leaders to directly engage with the UK public, answering questions from the audience and succinctly pitching their policies. In reality, the rise of #socialmedia and the fall in broadcast viewers means the surround sound to debates is often more important than the debate itself. In my latest blog for WA Communications I explore the role of debates in an election campaign, and whether with such a strong Labour lead, they can ever shift the dial 👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/eVf4m82Y

THE DEMOCRATIC TAP IS RUNNING DRY Fascinating POLITICO Westminster Insider podcast from March 22 exploring 'The secrets of the pollsters'. "Polling is like a tap to get a sense of where the nation's at." From the sounds of things, the water pressure isn't great: 17% of the Electorate remain undecided right now as to how they will vote, while consistency in party voting is at an all time low. Despite what we read in the headlines, it sounds like the result could swing any-which-way from here, so let's not get too comfortable with any hyperbole. The question has to be what role our young can play - 'leaning in' to politics when we know they are 'leaning out' in other aspects of these turbulent times. How can they own their story enough to take ownership of their democratic rights later this year? Whatever your politics, engaging with our young voters in the classroom, the office, and around the dinner table has to be paramount to properly represent the Electorate. None of us can rely on old-world political lines being redrawn. Their future is at stake, perhaps in ways we cannot yet see. https://lnkd.in/ecfQTm_h
