Specialist Leader, Cyber & Strategic Risk, Government & Public Services, Deloitte | Communications Strategy | Privacy & Tech Policy | Ex-NBC, NPR, U.S. Senate
You know when you’re in love, you kinda wanna shout it from the rooftops? I think I’ve exhausted my immediate friend group’s patience, so I’m taking to socials. I’m in love with my job. If I were to design a job for my exact skillet and personality, it would be the job I have. And in fact, I did design it, because this role was created for me. And now I get to sit here in a coffeeshop, feeling grateful that I’m getting paid to write a curriculum on cybersecurity for GenAI and take cool, novel defensive products to market. The part of this that surprises me every day is that I’m at Deloitte, and I actually love it. I’ve been rogue since 2012, long before COVID made everyone remote. Could I even rock heels and a blazer again? Could I say “synergy” with a straight face? Yes to the wardrobe update, and no to the corporatespeak, to which, remarkably, I’ve been showing the door without much resistance. I’m determined to make cybersecurity sexy and human readable. This stuff is fascinating, and it should feel fun, not formal. And somehow, people don’t seem to disagree! Before accepting this job, I made a promise to myself that I would not bifurcate my personality. I would not create a separate personality that I would take to work with me, only to shed it with relief when I closed my laptop. That’s wasted energy that’s better directed at almost anything else. And I've got a lot of things going on that require my energy. Besides, my personality is a core component of my zone of genius. Without it, I’d just be a meat-coated skeleton made from stardust hurtling through space. But could I stay myself and work in corporate? Unexpectedly, yes. I joke, I smile, I project my natural vivacious energy, and I lead with vulnerability. I’m not masking, and it’s wildly freeing. That I get to do this working at the tip of the spear, contributing to the defense of democracy when it is most imperiled? As Maria sings in the Sound of Music, I must have done something good. The last time I was this genuinely obsessed with and grateful for the work I get to do was at Akilah Institute in Rwanda. Cambridge Analytica redirected my attention toward digital privacy. I made significant contributions to the discourse around privacy, identity, and crypto, and I continue to convene leaders around these same themes. But finally, I made it home. I earned this, I worked for it, and I wake up excited every day.
You got me there with the first line 🤣

2wBy the way, I ran that "cybersecurity is sexy" line through my own personal tact and taste filter, just to make sure it's not a cancelable offense. And you know what? I'm in *excellent* company. Here's Jen Easterly, Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, saying, on the record, that it is exactly that. https://news.clearancejobs.com/2022/09/07/cisa-looks-to-make-cybersecurity-defense-sexy-keep-shields-up-to-protect-critical-infrastructure/
