Check out Basic Black's recent episode, "Black and Gay, Living in Massachusetts", for an insightful conversation on the intersection of issues impacting Black and LGBTQ community in Massachusetts. "Looking at the policy and legislation we just need to make sure that we're showing up and people are at the table who are thinking about us as well. Because a queer issue is a queer issue is a queer issue, but also a Black issue is very different sometimes than a queer issue and we need to be able to look at both, and we need to center both identities in the work that we're doing." - Shaplaie Brooks, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth For more information on the great work of the LGBTQ Commission, please check out their annual report and recommendations: https://lnkd.in/gzBaqJUf https://lnkd.in/gEVdRWs7

#author #entertainment #podcast #lgbt #lgbtq #intimatepartnerviolence #leadership #radiohost #artsentertainment #producersnetwork #transgender #producersnetwork Carter Brown: —Advocate & Warrior for Black Transmen! The new edition of WYATT! ( #Wyattonair ) rolls out the welcome mat for Carter Brown, founder and national director of Black Transmen, Inc., ( @BlackTransmen ) the first national nonprofit organization founded in 2011 for the empowerment, advocacy, and equality of Black transmen. I kick off the episode with the following statement from blacktransmen.org, the organization’s website: “Brown was compelled to help birth and build the organization, Black Transmen Inc. from the support and information he saw lacking in his own trans experience, versus that of other ethnicities and of the LGBT community. He wants to make his contribution to ending the cycle and diminishing the stereotypes by exposing the world to another face of the Black man.” Carter and I unpack that. The advocate and activist reveals that at age 14, he became homeless; his childhood was challenging and filled with dysfunction. Next, he describes his journey to become his authentic self: a transgender individual, and how it impacted him emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. However, Carter persevered, completing high school and college. But he hit an unexpected minefield, and the American Dream blew up in front of his eyes. He vividly details that egregious and painful circumstance. We soon discover that the experience is the perfect segue for an in-depth evaluation of Black Transmen. The founder and national director explains the necessity of the organization, and talks more about its vision and mission. 2024 is the eleventh year of the only National Black Trans Advocacy Conference, a unique educational and empowerment program event. Carter gives us the full monty on the conference, to be held in Dallas, Texas, from April 23-28. We then turn to the subject of stigma, and its deep impact on Black transmen. I ask the advocate and warrior for Black transmen precisely why he believes that he was called to be a leader in the movement for Black trans rights. His response shows that Mr. Brown is the epitome of a “Profile in Courage.” Get ready for another absorbing and astounding installment of WYATT! Simply put, this is yet another reason why WYATT! is "Eargasm Fo' Tha Grown Folks!" And remember: there ain’t NO doubt about it. https://lnkd.in/ecDkEMQ7

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 When you celebrate pride, you're sending a message out into the world for anyone and everyone that sees it that this world has a place for us. There's a lot going on right now if you're LGBTQ . We're used as corporate props to access demographics. We're painted as monsters to sway disconnected voters. We're having basic human rights stripped away. We're being put on lists. Elected officials are calling for us to be eradicated. Its easy to feel scared. But on days like today - the anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) legalizing #marriageequality - we remember that the angry bigoted mobs and the people at their helm haven't won. Progress has been made. Kindness, determination, and love of humanity triumphed over thoughtless hate, misinformation, and violence. You don't have to uproot your life with grand sweeping efforts to support LGBTQ people. All it takes is one #pride post, one update to your profile, one 𝒍𝒐𝒖𝒅 message to your social sphere. Then suddenly the world around you is a little more gentle and the people who share your space will be a little less scared. When you are seen celebrating others it gives them the space to celebrate themselves. Make the world a kinder place, by being loud about pride. Happy pride.

This assemblage of Mondaire Jones is one of the first two openly gay Black members of the U.S. Congress elected in 2020. His impact is indelible despite losing his seat due to redistricting in 2022. In American history, enslaved people were seen only as commodities. They were bought, sold, and exploited. They could be tossed aside as quickly as garbage. African-American gay men have been attacked, brutalized, and even murdered both in large coastal cities and in rural areas. I made this portrait of Mondaire out of debris to celebrate the elevation of African-American Gay men to the status of U.S. Representative. When people see themselves reflected in books, the media, and the government, it opens up possibilities they may have never known were possible. It inspires a new generation of thought leaders. #MondaireJones #RepresentationMatters #Resilience" #SarahSchneidermanArt #SocialJusticeArt #PoliticalArt #NonRecyclableArt #ArtFromTrash #ArtWithAMessage #ArtForChange #ArtActivism #ArtForACause #ArtForEquality #ArtForSocialChange #ArtForThePeople #ArtWithPurpose #ArtThatMatters #ArtForAwareness #ArtForProgress #ArtForImpact #ArtForCommunity #ArtForInclusion #ArtForDiversity #ArtForUnity #ArtForTransformation #ArtForHope #ArtForInspiration #Blackpoliticians #gaypolitician #lgbtqleaders

GAY RIGHTS VS BLACK RIGHTS | CAN WE SAY IT HAS SIMILARITIES? HAS WHITE AMERICA TWISTED MORAL AROUND TO THE EXTENT WHERE INDIVIDUALS LIKE MYRICK DON'T HAVE A BETTER CLUE ON THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BLACK RIGHTS VS. GAY RIGHTS. HAVE THEY PUT ANOTHER PUPPET THEY CAN CONTROL IN POSITION? We can all affirm that there are many huge differences. As an award-winning activist who speaks across this country. I see this as an insult to black families or the black civil rights movement in America. Ignorant doesn't always mean a lack of education or knowledge. One of the many major reasons I stopped applauding successful blacks in positions is because many are sold out. There will never be a comparison between black rights and gay rights. There are no similarities, and if anyone tries to create one, It tells us how ignorant they are of black culture!! WE DIDN'T CREATE GAY LIFESTYLES. How can we create gay rights? MAKES IT MAKE SENSE." author, Burning Down the House: How Libertarian Philosophy Was Corrupted by Delusion and Greed, St. Martin’s Press, 2022.
My newest paper, The Supreme Court’s Gay Rights-Religious Liberty Contortions, is newly posted at SSRN. Here is the abstract: The Supreme Court has heard several cases in which conservative religious claimants objected to antidiscrimination laws requiring them to provide services to LGBT people. Each time it has disposed of the case in a way that let the religious claimant win, but established no clear doctrine. The Court misconstrued the record or misrepresented the challenged state law or both, and invented new doctrinal rules so extreme or obscure that they cannot possibly be applied consistently by lower courts. The pattern appears in four cases: Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, Fulton v. Philadelphia, and 303 Creative v. Elenis. A fifth, Scardina v. Masterpiece, seems likely to repeat it. I describe the pattern and propose an explanation, arising from two difficulties characteristic of religious exemption cases: courts must worry about opening the floodgates to so many claims that the underlying statute’s purposes will be defeated, and courts have no legal basis for determining what is or is not a compelling interest. https://lnkd.in/g2z6MvYY
