Anxiety in autism is three times more likely than in neurotypical children and teens. Yet, calm, deep breathing can help kids feel better. Deep breaths stimulate the vagus nerve which in turn stimulates the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. This activates a relaxation response. There are many ways to practice deep breathing. “Take 3 Breaths Together” is one of my favorite games. In this game you place your hands on a child’s shoulders and they place their hands on your shoulders. You take turns taking 3 breaths together. This allows a child to feel and experience breathing with a trusted adult. They learn about the movement in breathing and its regular rhythm. Share in the comments your favorite games or tips and tricks to teach deep breathing.

Stimming, or self-stimulatory behavior, is common in children with autism. It can include repetitive movements like hand-flapping, rocking, or spinning objects. While stimming can be soothing, it can sometimes interfere with daily activities. To support a child who stims: 1. Recognize the behavior: Identify what triggers the stimming. 2. Create a safe environment: Ensure they can stim safely. 3. Introduce alternatives: Offer other sensory activities or calming techniques. 4. Seek professional guidance: Consult with therapists for personalized strategies. #Stimming #SupportAndUnderstanding #autism
