We are happy to announce that RA Capital has partnered with the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) Investor Catalyst Hub as a “spoke” in their network. We admire the ambition of the ARPA-H team to catalyze the development and commercialization of solutions to some of society’s most vexing health problems. Working with academic laboratories and industry, ARPA-H is the ultimate “yes” to the question of whether industry or NIH invents medicines… it takes all of us working together to navigate past roadblocks to progress. Working with ARPA-H also gives us hope that the same administration that created ARPA-H won’t undermine its mission by dismantling the framework of patents and market-based pricing that inspires the private sector to put hundreds of billions of dollars into R&D each year (nearly 100x ARPA-H’s budget) and will instead ultimately solve affordability for patients via insurance reform to cap what plans can charge patients in out-of-pocket costs.

GLP-1s are here to stay, and digital health companies like Ro, Calibrate, WeightWatchers and hims & hers are getting in on the action. These companies capitalizing on the soaring demand for GLP-1s like Ozempic and Wegovy by building programs and services for users on top of the medications. The opportunity could be massive: Some analysts estimate that anti-obesity medications could grow into a $100 billion industry by the end of the decade. Investors are cheering them on, but it hasn't all been smooth sailing. Supply shortages are one of the big hurdles for companies in the market, as spiking demand has made it difficult for many patients to access the treatments. Latest with Annika Kim Constantino!

Having worked in Retail and Healthcare, I am captivated by Dr. Sachin Jain’s post. The topic of consumerism in healthcare is multi-layered. 1) The Consumer construct from typical business interactions assumes the consumer is the payer (I shop at Best Buy and I pay for what I buy.) In much of healthcare, the patient isn’t the payer and the consumer construct fails to predict/shape behavior (and results). 2) Healthy “consumers”, especially if they are digitally savvy, engage healthcare from a convenience perspective. When injured or ill, that perspective can quickly switch to a quality-of-care focus.
Two decades ago, the term “consumer” started creeping into healthcare at a brisk pace. Consumers Consumerism Customers Shopping What happened to “patients?” It was seen as disempowering. Or paternalistic. But “consumerism” in healthcare has been a mixed blessing. Consumerism brought copays and coinsurance. It brought us an endless array of ratings and rankings—only some of which have any correlation to the real quality of care. Fervent advocates for consumerism say—we are in the middle of the movie. Don’t judge it by the middle…judge it by the end. There’s more to do and see. And when we get there, everything will be better for everyone—patients and doctor alike. Skeptics say—we’ve seen enough. Healthcare is different (as they’ve always said). People don’t want to shop for healthcare. They just want to be cared for—with the best medicine has to offer. Consumerism introduces a commercial edge to something that fundamentally shouldn’t be commercial. Consumerism has been good for the countless private enterprises that it has yielded…but benefit for patients has been vastly overstated. The best analogs for more fully consumer-driven markets are dentistry and veterinary medicine…or countries like India…where few people have insurance…and access to care is uneven at best. What can we learn from this analogues? Where do you stand? Will consumerism save the day? Or is it an experiment that has gone on for long enough—-and it’s time to call it.

Imagine you have a rare disease and there is a new drug to treat it, but health insurers won't cover it until the price is set. 💊 The speed of these negotiations is crucial. That's where Lyfegen, co-founded by Michel Mohler, Nico Julian Mros and Girisha Fernando, comes in. Lyfegen has developed a revolutionary rebate management calculator that speeds up and simplifies this process for health insurers. Without this platform, health insurers miss out on up to 30% of rebates due to complexity and lack of overview. This needs to change – effortlessly and to the benefit of all parties involved. Read more about Lyfegen's success story in our article: https://lnkd.in/eE9BepN3 Congratulations to the whole team of Lyfegen for the well-deserved SEF.Growth High Potential Label! 👏🏼 #SEF #Growth #highpotential #scaleup #SuccessStory #innovation

5 things I've learned from extensive research about the preventative care space since leaving my job as a Strategy Consultant... In August 2023, I left my position as a Strategy Consultant to pursue my obsession for cracking the nut around the significant challenge of preventative care - 80% of all heart diseases (the world's leading cause of death [2]) could have been prevented [1], just to tell a part of the story. Over the past four months, I have devoted my time to validating and building my startup in the preventative care space. The concept of the startup has evolved several times, parallel with new insights and learnings. I feel I'm getting closer to a solution that actually solve the problem around prevention. Here are 5 key insights from my last few months, based on 100 interviews and meetings with customers, market experts, partners, VCs, business angels, etc.: ✅1/ Most people, doctors, and companies agree that our healthcare system is overly focused on treatments - indicating a huge gap in proactive healthcare. ✅2/ Most people don't want to pay much for their own long-term health - but this is slowly improving as out-of-pocket spending increases year-over-year. ✅3/ People are generally less healthy than they think - more than 50% in Europe have too high cholesterol levels [3], with >90% not knowing their LDL / 'bad' cholesterol level [4]. ✅4/ Insurance companies are more interested in your health than you are - particularly when your health can be quantified. ✅5/ Very few products / solutions today actually address prevention on a large scale with great effect - however, current technological advancements and macro trends indicate that now is the time. ❔Which of these learnings surprises you the most? Also, if you're working in this space and want to discuss how this significant problem can be solved, please feel free to reach out. (Sources in the comments)
