🇺🇸 Reflections on the 4th of July 🇺🇸 Tomorrow is Independence Day, a day that once filled me with unshakable pride for the “land of the free and home of the brave.” Growing up, I believed our country was the greatest, viewing it through rose-colored glasses and celebrating with joy every 4th of July. But as I’ve aged, I’ve become acutely aware of the darker sides of our history—the injustices and challenges that shaped us. Now at 41, I struggle with mixed emotions when I hear the national anthem, see our flag, or watch fireworks. It’s hard not to feel disheartened by the realization that our nation isn’t quite the ideal I once believed. We’re facing critical issues today: increasing laws that restrict rights and a shift away from the ideals of freedom and equality. What happened to the “melting pot” of diversity and opportunity? It feels like freedom is becoming more selective, and it’s concerning. I know this isn’t my usual upbeat post, but these thoughts weigh on me. It’s crucial that we recognize these problems and work together to rebuild the true spirit of our nation before it’s too late. Let’s hope we can steer this ship back on course and truly embody the principles we hold dear. #FourthOfJuly #IndependenceDay #Reflection #Equality #Freedom #HopeForChange

Juneteenth National Independence Day was signed into law as a national holiday on June 17, 2021. The holiday celebrates the date of June 19, 1865, when slaves in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom, which had been granted by the Jan. 1, 1863, Emancipation Proclamation but which was not enforceable until the end of the Civil War. The holiday is often celebrated with parades, family reunions, speeches, and eating specific red foods.
