Black Women Representation in Research and Studies- Go To: www.voices.cancer.org As many know here, we lost our Mom to cancer in 2022. There is so much we need to know and participate to help with research for the black community. I have connections, family and friends across the country, so please consider. The American Cancer Society (ACS) is embarking on a very important research project called VOICES of Black Women . The Goal is to recruit Black woman between the ages of 25 and 55 with no history of cancer (except basal or squamous skin cancer) and also live in one of our study enrollment states (Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.). Historically, Black women have been excluded and overlooked in critical health conversations and medical advancements, leading to a high rate of aggressive cancer diagnoses and deaths. VOICES of Black Women is a groundbreaking long-term study, led by the American Cancer Society and powered by the voices of Black women across the US. As a Black woman, I am proud to share this amazing partnership between Genentech and the American Cancer Society: The "Voices of Black Women Study" aims to better understand the drivers of inequitable cancer outcomes among Black women. Everyone should have access to early detection, effective treatments, and survival. Did you know that according to ACS, Black women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than our white counterparts despite having a lower incidence rate? This is the stark reality that we face, which underscores the urgent need for targeted research and interventions. This long-term study will gather data from over 100,000 Black women between the ages of 25 and 55 across 20 states and D.C., from diverse backgrounds and income levels who have not been diagnosed with cancer. Beginning May 6th, the American Cancer Society is looking for 100,000 Black women between 25 and 55 years of age who have never had cancer to participate in the VOICES of Black Women study. The focus of this study is to better understand cancer and other health conditions among Black women. You must live in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Delaware is not included, but please share with women in the states above. Participation in VOICES involves completing an online health and life history survey at enrollment and updating your health information twice a year for at least 30 years. Results from this study will help inform how to improve the health of Black women for generations to come. It’s #worldcancerday and the theme has been to #closethecaregap This video highlights the disparities faced especially by Black women. Why do they exist and how can we change them? There’s so much work that needs to be done and we are constantly highlighting these staggering stats, this reality that so many have experienced. We need more action and the time is NOW. So what can we do? • Continue to raise awareness and seek medical attention when you notice any worrying symptoms • Challenge biases you witness and also consider your own unconscious bias • Campaign, advocate and support for better treatment • Partake in research • Follow and support charities who are the doing ground work and working tirelessly (I’ve tagged a few - please include any you can think of in the comments) • Continue to campaign and push for fair equal and equitable treatment and support • Work collaboratively. American Cancer Society is doing important research to close the gap between the health outcomes of Black woman and men/White women. From Voices.Cancer.org "For generations, Black women have not been equally included in important health research resulting in a lack of information specific to Black women’s health. Including Black women in research is a crucial step toward improving cancer outcomes and eliminating disparities. By joining together, we can gain valuable insights into the diverse experiences and health challenges faced by Black women and learn how to deliver culturally competent and effective interventions, treatments, and preventive measures. Black women have made significant advancements in the areas of education, economics, business, and politics. NOW is the time to see similar advancements in health. By engaging in the VOICES of Black Women, we can help transform the health of Black women."

It's #BlackHistoryMonth, an annual commemoration of the history, stories, and accomplishments of Black Americans. Throughout the month, we will highlight the important work of the PanCAN community to make equitable progress in the fight against #pancreaticcancer. 💜 Our mission is to improve the lives of everyone impacted by pancreatic cancer, but pancreatic cancer doesn’t affect everyone equally. Black Americans are more likely to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States. As the first organization dedicated to fighting pancreatic cancer in a comprehensive way, PanCAN has long been committed to centering health equity and eliminating health disparities through 🔬 research, 📣 advocacy, 👥 community engagement, and 💜 patient support. BW4HL wants to walk this journey with you because No one should be walking this journey alone. BW4HL is committed to advocating, educating and empowering Black Women impacted by Breast Cancer. Whether you are a fighter, survivor, a caregiver, co-survivor, family member or friend, we all need a little help when dealing with cancer and other stressful life changes. This Support Group is designed to provide emotional and social support that help Black Women cope with the struggles of cancer. We know you may experience anger, fear, frustration, a sense of helplessness, feeling alone and feel like you can’t open up to others to share your feelings. We know that many of our Black Women may feel shy or skeptical, “I don’t feel comfortable talking in groups.”, “I’m doing fine. I don’t need support.”, “How can I get to a support group when I’m so busy taking care for my family. ***Disclosure: All support groups are confidential and a safe place. As we celebrate Black History Month, it is important to acknowledge that Black women in the United States continue to face breast health disparities due to systemic inequities and barriers that make it difficult to access services. This month, we hope you can take time to learn more about these health disparities, their causes, and what you can do to help advocate for Black women. Here are some sobering statistics: Black women have a 41% higher death rate from breast cancer: While the incidence of breast cancer is similar among Black and White women, Black women have a lower 5-year survival rate for every stage of breast cancer diagnosis partially due to a lack of access to high-quality treatment. Also, 82% of Black women live at least 5 years after their initial breast cancer diagnosis, compared to 92% of White women, and U.S.-born Black women have up to 46% higher risk of developing Triple Negative Breast Cancer - a typically more aggressive strain. With our advocacy programming and working alongside Patient Navigators and partner organizations, Brem continues to push for equitable access to health care for all – regardless of the ability to pay. #BreastHealth #HealthEquity #BreastHealthCare
