The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a revised strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping. The new strategy sets an ambitious target of reaching net-zero emissions by or around 2050. The revised strategy includes a number of measures to achieve this target, including: - Strengthening the energy efficiency of new ships. - Increasing the use of zero-and near-zero emission fuels. - Introducing a maritime emissions pricing mechanism. Infographic - Fit for 55: towards more sustainable transport Reducing the use of fossil fuels in transport is key if the EU is to reach climate neutrality by 2050. In order to achieve this goal, there needs to be enough recharging points and alternative fuel refuelling points in the EU for the cars, planes and ships that use them. The alternative fuels infrastructure regulation – part of the Fit for 55 package – sets concrete targets for deploying such infrastructure in the EU in the upcoming years. In June 2022, EU member states, meeting within the Council, agreed a common position on the Commission’s proposal for this regulation. The Council and the Parliament reached a provisional deal on the proposal in March 2023. The new regulation was adopted by the Council in July 2023.

There is so much to learn about the new strategies adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. The IMO 2023 regulations are aimed at improving ships’ fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions by: 40% by 2030 and annual GHG emissions by at least 70% by 2050. These measures will reduce the shipping industry's impact on the environment using goals that are fair and equitable for all, including developing countries. #SavinoDelBene #Shipping #Imo2023

🚢🌍 Navigating Towards a Greener Horizon: International Efforts in Maritime Emission Reduction The maritime industry is setting sail towards a more sustainable future! International regulations like #MARPOL Annex VI and the #IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap are paving the way for cleaner shipping, reducing sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions. 🛢️✅ As we celebrate these milestones, let's not forget the ongoing commitment to achieve the International Maritime Organization's ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The energy efficiency index (EEXI) and the forthcoming Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) are vital tools in this journey. The collaborative spirit of global organizations, governments, and industry stakeholders is steering us towards eco-friendly technologies and alternative fuels, revolutionizing the way we sail the seas. Join us in celebrating these international initiatives that are charting a course for a greener, more sustainable maritime industry. Together, we can navigate towards a brighter, climate-resilient horizon. ⚓🌟 Reporter: Bernard Lee Designer: ZHANG Zhibo #GAUC #MaritimeEmissions #SustainabilityAtSea #ClimateAction

💡 IMO raises the ambition of emission reduction In July 2023 (MEPC 80) IMO adopted the 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships in accordance with the agreed programme of follow-up actions. The 2023 IMO GHG Strategy envisages, in particular, a reduction in carbon intensity of international shipping (to reduce CO2 emissions per transport work), as an average across international shipping, by at least 40% by 2030. It also includes a new level of ambition relating to the uptake of zero or near-zero GHG emission technologies, fuels and/or energy sources which are to represent at least 5%, striving for 10%, of the energy used by international shipping by 2030. 🔗 : https://lnkd.in/dBPMk-CW

Stricter carbon targets set by the IMO in July for shipping could lead the maritime industry short of carbon-neutral fuels by 2030, according to the latest DNV Maritime Forecast. The report estimates that to achieve a 20% reduction in emissions by 2030, the maritime sector must access a staggering 30-40% of the projected worldwide carbon-neutral fuel supply by that date. https://lnkd.in/eNGN7tRG #shippingindustry #carbonemissions #IMOtargets #maritimeindustry #carbonneutral #DNVMaritimeForecast #emissionsreduction
