Solutions for people cannot be airdropped, they must arise from the context of the communities they are meant for in order to create tangible value. Initiatives aimed at improving lives often fail because they are disconnected from communities, the context, and the reality. Human-centered design puts the human—the community, the context, and the reality—at the center.

When implemented the right way, programs that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace benefit everyone. What we see failing or short-sighted, superficial attempts to virtue signal commitment to these values without really doing the work. An annual training does not constitute an initiative. When systems and workplaces are built without these values in mind, it takes consistent work and effort to integrate them into your workplace culture.
