Introducing . . . the DEI Series. What does it mean to embrace #DEI in an era where the acronym’s popularity has begun to distort its impact? In this series, we aim to break it down to examine how we can build it back up. You’ll find conversations about advocating for equitable educational facilities, the role demolition plays in restoring history, what a diverse team really looks like, and the intentions that back up inclusive workplace design. Interesting read and a good reminder of how much work needs still to be done. I recognize so many examples stated in this article from my own work experience. A but scheptical at first, but good to reflect from time to time… "The architecture of the modern workplace was primarily drafted by and for men." I never thought about it that... Well, good that we are changing it and so many good things are happening to create better workplaces for genreations to come! #culturematters #cultureatheart #equity #inclusiveworkplaces

Solutions for people cannot be airdropped, they must arise from the context of the communities they are meant for in order to create tangible value. Initiatives aimed at improving lives often fail because they are disconnected from communities, the context, and the reality. Human-centered design puts the human—the community, the context, and the reality—at the center.

When implemented the right way, programs that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace benefit everyone. What we see failing or short-sighted, superficial attempts to virtue signal commitment to these values without really doing the work. An annual training does not constitute an initiative. When systems and workplaces are built without these values in mind, it takes consistent work and effort to integrate them into your workplace culture. I'd say the benefits of that time and effort far outweigh the costs. #Equity #Diversity #Inclusion #WorkplaceEquity

If you have a spare 10 minutes today, I implore you to watch this video... 'Separate is Not Equal' is a powerful talk by Suzan Ucmaklioglu on the importance of inclusive design. With personal experiences many of us can resonate with and a link to The Bristol Hippodrome, I'm sure it will be a worthwhile break from work... Key takeaways: 🔑 Separate entrances for disabled individuals reinforce inequality. 🔑 Universal Design benefits everyone - from parents with strollers to the elderly. 🔑 Economic Power: 14.1M disabled people in the UK hold significant spending power. 🔑 Personal impact: Suzan's father's experience with MS highlighted the direct implications of inaccessibility on family and friends. 🔑 Successful Projects: Hammersmith Town Hall's 'ruthlessly inclusive' design is a model for future projects. 🔑 Pandemic Lessons: COVID-19 adaptations showed we can create inclusive environments swiftly and on scale. "separate is not equal, separate is not inclusive, and it really is not good enough" I hope this video encourages those working in the built environment to strive for inclusivity in every project!! #Inclusivity #UniversalDesign #Accessibility #Equality https://lnkd.in/e2zzRmH8

The future of business requires new thinking that takes advantage of the skills and talents of ALL generations. To do this, organizations need to reconsider their approach to compensation and benefits strategies and workplace design. Join me at Humber Research & Innovation, either in person or virtually, on Thursday, May 3, for "Designing For Demographic Resilience." I'll discuss the labor market's shifting demographics and share how smart businesses are rethinking their strategies. Inclusion is the future, and well-managed inclusive organizations always outperform those that are not. #futureofwork #inclusion #inclusivedesign
