Today we celebrate Juneteenth. 🫶 Also known as “Freedom Day” and “Emancipation Day,” Juneteenth marks a pivotal day – the arrival of Union General Gordon Granger in Texas in 1865, finally bringing the news of freedom to enslaved people there. Though the Emancipation Proclamation came earlier, Texas’ remote location delayed its impact. It wouldn’t be for another six months that slavery in the United States would be formally abolished with the ratification of the 13th Amendment. While freedom wasn’t instant across the nation, Juneteenth celebrates that pivotal moment in Texas and the ongoing fight for equality. • • • • #camposhomesnj #equality #juneteenth #juneteenthcelebration #realtor #realestate #realtorlife #camdencounty #gloucestercounty #burlingtoncounty #southjerseyrealtor #njrealtor #kellerwilliamsrealty #kellerwilliamsrealtor #newjerseyrealestate #newjerseyrealtor

National Freedom Day commemorates the emancipation from slavery. On this day in 1865, President Lincoln officially adopted the 13th Amendment, a pivotal moment that abolished slavery in the United States. This historic amendment underscores the principles of equality and freedom for all individuals, leaving an indelible mark on American history. It is essential to recognize the profound impact of this quest for freedom, justice, and equality not only in the United States but also on Canada. The Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses, played a crucial role in the escape of enslaved individuals to freedom, with some finding sanctuary in Canada. This shared history highlights the interconnected struggle for human rights and freedom on both sides of the border. In the spirit of our collective journey towards justice and equality, National Freedom Day serves as a poignant reminder. Let's celebrate the richness of diversity that defines each of us, fostering unity in our differences as we work together for a more promising and harmonious future. Today is Emancipation Day, which recognizes the history of slavery in the British Empire. In Canada, both African and Indigenous Peoples were enslaved. This is not just a day memorializing shameful practices in Canada's past, but also an opportunity to acknowledge the anti-Black and anti-Indigenous discrimination and racism that continues in our country. Through recognition and education, we can build understanding and equality. https://lnkd.in/gtvK-jm

For a very long time, I have wondered, how could there be such a commitment to fighting for justice that largely overlooks the perspective, the overt plight of the Black immigrant? How could it be so offensive on the part of any to advocate for Blackness, only when such a justice is somehow marred by its intersection with the immigrant? How could it be possible on the one hand, that there be such disdain regarding one’s decision to highlight one’s Caribbeanness or Africanness as migrants or as US nationals, yet on the other, a supposed commitment to advocating for the role that we, all of us, racialized as black American or not, have to play in the movement for liberation? Clearly, as tends to be the case, I was of course, focused on the wrong question. A more logical question would be: “What creates the fallacy that allows an individual to be so confident in the assumption that they are somehow involved in a fight for liberation which frees ONLY an elevated posse of the oppressed but places a muzzle on the mouth of an inferiorly designated oppressee, placing sanctions on their capacity to advocate for a liberation that in the eyes of the elevated oppressed, seems unfamiliar, foreign, uninformed by the liberation and racial logics that we deem to be most appropriate, most acceptable, most superiorly positioned in the fight for justice?” Who holds the keys to degrees of just liberation and to the scepter of liberation discourse? Who determines how it must be wielded, or not, to advance the cause of a certain cadre of oppressed while it remains committed to the neglect of others? Who stands in judgment to determine the transactional nature of liberation and the parameters by which it must be granted or withheld? And what works are needed by certain oppressed populations, deemed more inferior than others, in order for such rights to be invoked or somehow routinely discarded, dismissed? How can we, advocating for a just liberation, require a certain behavior from certain populations of humans, just as oppressed as ourselves, before we, those of us who deem ourselves as racially superior as the dominant group we condemn, believe these peoples are unconditionally entitled to freedom? And how are innocent children and youth forced to wrestle with such tensions impacted by our conditional justice? Make no mistake, no condition exists on which to hang the just liberation of all humans. It is impossible to advocate for a cause that sets only certain oppressed peoples free. Only the recognition of our shared humanity can redeem us. #justice #truth #diversity #humanity #race #unpopularopinion
