Where were you when? Memories make a great way to get the conversation started about the end of life. For example, “Where were you when the Berlin Wall fell?” I remember watching it on TV with my parents; The big old Habitat chair my Dad sat in; The Crittall French windows that opened onto the garden; The TV set, as deep as it was wide; These memories are so heartwarming, especially with Dad gone. Sharing these types of memories is a great way to start a conversation about death: Most people have a memory or two that they want to share; Many worry things from their past will be forgotten; For the person starting the conversation, there is the incentive to learn something from the past; If you are putting off talking to your people about death, this is a gentle first step. For New Year’s Eve, myself and a colleague hosted a virtual event for 100 Covid Cautious BIPOC folks. Many of us have lost access to public space due to a complete lack of Covid mitigations when COVID is still killing and disabling people. We had 3 virtual dance floors, a spades tournament, a visioning for 2024 workshop, an art gallery, karaoke, short/feature film screenings, a haunted house and more. It went for a full 24 hours and there have been folks hanging in our virtual drop in space since. I say this to say two things: 1. There is a NEED for organizations and groups to continue making virtual events and 2. They can be fun if you care about them and don’t see them as a deficit!!!!! We are hosting an ongoing virtual BIPOC Covid Cautious drop in space AND a virtual event center. As someone who is immunocomprimised and a performer, this has been a vital space for me too! If you have questions, ASK, but do not keep going through this pandemic pretending that people are unimpacted by COVID.
